Task

Many organisations invest a great deal of effort and time in mapping out detailed plan of action to help them succeed in their chosen enterprise. Gluek (quoted in Jeyarathmm, 2007) described the "unified comprehensive and integrated plan designed to ensure that the basic objective of enterprise is achieved" as the definition of a Strategy. By extension, strategic analysis of an industry is aimed at understanding the threats and opportunities that confront organisations in the external macro-environment. Businesses usually embark on such analysis to make informed strategic choices that leverage the opportunities and circumnavigate the threats (Jeyarathmm, 2007). However, strategic analysis is also useful for business analysts and investors as it allows them gain good understanding of a firm’s actions within the external context. In this report, we examine the impact that evolving technological factors and changing competitive landscape is having on the MultiChoice Group (MCG) - Africa's foremost video entertainment service provider with operations in about 50 countries in Africa. The MultiChoice Group was selected for this evaluation, in part due to my past work history with the company, but more particularly because of its rich history on the African continent and business complexity. MCG has 3 dozen years of experience, serving 50 countries in Africa, with a diverse customer base of 20.9m subscribers and complex corporate structure, with several strategic business units and brands. It is publicly quoted in the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE), South Africa and thus has vast publicly available financial data. This report was driven by secondary sourced data that is available from books, journals, published financial statements and news articles. These sources were reasonably cost efficient and fit within the timeline and budget for producing this report.

The data was subjected to analytical framework including PESTEL analysis and Porter's Five Forces analysis (UNICAF, 2021) to draw useful insights. Following this introductory section, the report continues with a short discuss on the research methodology engaged and the boundaries of the evaluation. It then proceeds to provide deep context and insight about the subject of the evaluation - the MultiChoice Group. This is followed by an analysis of the company's external environment and key trends using the PESTEL framework and focusing on the technological and sociological dimensions. This is immediately followed with further analysis of the competitive landscape and other key industry pressures that impact on MCG’s profitability using Porter's Five Forces analytical framework as our backdrop. The report then reviews MultiChoice Group's strategic responses to these opportunities and threats, and its impact on stakeholders before rounding up with the conclusion. 2 Methods (100) Research methodology is a process to collect, assemble, analyse, and assess the data for a specific research question (Ørngreen & Levinsen, 2017). The data collection is usually from primary and secondary sources. Primary data collection includes first-hand data that needs prolonged time and expenses. The data collection sources in primary data are survey questionnaires, focus groups, interviews, and observations (Singh, 2006). Whereas secondary data collection includes already existing sources to collect data, and therefore requires shorter time and less expenses to collect data. Secondary data collection sources are the library and the internet, where previous research articles, journals, books, and magazines can be taken as sources (Singh, 2006). For the current report, secondary data collection is leveraged. Qualitative research design is selected due to the need for a proper explanation of the facts related to strategic business issues. The analysis is presented in the discussions part of the study, where strategic business issues and their impact on various stakeholders are assessed. The data is accessed from known sources to increase the credibility of the research. The references are collected by using inclusion and exclusion criteria.
