Coursework scenario

External funding was granted to the Sunflower Valley Teaching Hospital* for the establishment and daily operation of a new state-of-the-art laboratory for assessment and training people with lower extremity impairments to drive vehicles with steering adaptations (called here for short as Laboratory for Driving Assessment and Training). [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7] The hospital already has modern departments that prescribe wheelchairs and prostheses and collaborates with a number of external manufacturers that provide steering adaptations for cars so that disabled car drivers can use them; it is anticipated that the new laboratory will complement the existing services admirably.

For the new laboratory, the hospital intends to procure a cutting-edge, artificial intelligence-based driving simulator for assessing and training individuals with lower extremity impairments (called here for short as Car Driving Simulator). The new driving simulator is anticipated to be easily configurable and capable of simulating various hand steering algorithms. It is expected that it will permit the connection of additional interface devices for control and steering and will include a large number of sensors for monitoring the user's responses. It is envisaged that the software of the new simulator will automatically generate various tests that emulate a wide variety of road conditions and situations, evaluate user responses, analyse the level of interaction, stress, and mental load of the disabled drivers when they use each of the tested algorithms of car control, and offer suggestions to the staff for further improvements of the structure and parameters of the intended car control adaptation.
