Factors influencing challenging behaviour(approx. 400 words)

Select several specific characteristics of autism and environmental factors from the case study data. For each, describe the factor, give examples from the case study data, then explain how and why these factors may place the case study at increased risk of demonstrating a challenging behaviour (CB). Support your discussion by synthesising and critically analysing research and case study information.

Task details

Description

For a provided case study, produce a report for the individuals parents or teachers which explains influences on behaviour for the individual, assesses a behaviour of focus, and hypothesises the function of the behaviour of focus.

Below is some data from home and school on a (fictional) child on the autism spectrum who is demonstrating some behaviours which may be considered challenging. The task description is below. The suggested format for the report (which needs to include references and links to the research literature) is at the bottom of this section.

In your report you will need to provide:

very brief description of the child,

factors within the child's profile or the environment that may increase or decrease the risk of challenging behaviour

statement of thebehaviour(s) that challenge(s),

an explanation of what a function of behaviour is and how data is used to inform function

summary and analysis of information gathered from home (include a critique and evaluation of the quality of this data),

summary and analysis of information gathered from school (include a critique and evaluation of the quality of this data),

hypothesisedfunction of thebehaviourthat challenges,

further information required,

summary.

The information in the report should be supported with reference to the literature and should be presented and written in an appropriate way for the intended audience (1750 words).

You should also identify what further information you require in order to strengthen the hypothesis about the function of suchbehaviours, including describing and evaluating the tools needed to obtain this.

Tip!Keep in mind (1) do not go beyond the data and (2) not all the data you have been given is equally reliable, valid or helpful...! If you can justify why you might have placed more emphasis on one piece of data over another, that is fine.

Tip!The week 5 tutorial and the video on analysingdatadiscuss helpful ways of analysingand presenting the data. You may wish to watch/listen to these more than once when working through this assessment.

Welcome to this video on Assessment 1. I'm just going to provide an overview on Assessment 1. You will do this in a lot more detail in your tutorials. So for Assessment 1, we provide you with a case study of an autistic person who is demonstrating some behaviours which may be considered challenging. We will include in this case study you get information from home and school. So we do this so that you can really focus in on looking at data and analysing the data, evaluating the data and looking at factors which may influence the person's likelihood of showing a behaviour. And this is kind of giving you the skills so that in assessment 2, you'll be able to apply it to your own context. So you need to explain factors which may influence behaviour for that person. Choose a behaviour of focus and write an operational undefination of that behaviour. Summarise and analyse the data provided about the behaviour and hypothesise the function of the behaviour or the focus. And also think about what other information would you need to confirm your hypothesis. Now this is done as a report but it remembered is an academic assessment so ensure your work is informed by research. And appropriate referencing is used in your writing. Now the aim is to identify and this is you would have noticed throughout the course. So even if you just listened to the intro video, we're looking at environmental contextual factors which might increase or decrease the risk of a person demonstrating and challenging behaviour. So identify characteristics from the autism, autistic person's profile which may increase or decrease the likelihood of the risk of the challenging behaviour occurring. And then to hypothesise based on that knowledge and based on the data collected what need is being supported by that behaviour.

So I said it's a report for the autistic person's parents or teachers. Present your work in a format that will be using language that's written or is appropriate for your target audience. Remember that it to identify who you're writing it for is it for parents or schools. So if you're one thing that sometimes people do is that they might think I'm writing it for the parents and then in the report they'll say they'll refer to the parent.

But forget that they're actually writing it to the parent. And so the language you use and how you address the person. So you know it might be in the report or in the information you provided from home is a way of presenting the information. And as I mentioned before it is an academic piece so you do have to write back up your claims with research. Now the format overview and I'm just going to bring this up a bit more. The report should contain and it's worth taking note of these headings and structuring your start, open a document, put these headings in and then start putting your information in the different areas. So introduction and brief description of the person and that their context, the factors within the child's environment and all context that may increase or decrease the risk of the challenging behavior occurring. An explanation of theory and concepts relating to the function of behavior. What do we know about function of behavior and what this means and what are functions of behavior? Operational definition and the behavior that challengea. A summary of the information gathered from the team and include a critique and evaluation of the quality of the data. And summary of the information comes from the school and include a critique and evaluation of the data. So the behavior team is the information from the families. Then the next heading would be hypothesized function of the behavior that challenges. Then what do I think about do I need further information to find out if this is the function or not? And if I do what information? So it has to be directly supporting information that will help clarify whether the function that you've hypothesized is the function for that person. So think about carefully what additional information do you need and then provide a summary. So if you are breaking up your video, this is a good time to stop and then come back to it at another stage. So what do you need to do? Getting started. Read through all the information relating to the task including the marking, rubric and the case study information. Now the case study information you're going to need to read through a few times. I would read through it initially and then as you do work through module one and module two, I would start thinking about highlighting sections or thinking, oh that actually explains what that looks like. That sounds like this characteristic and based on my knowledge of factors that increase the risk of challenging behavior that sort of fits in there. Or when you're doing module two and you're looking at interpreting the data, go through the data that you have in your case study and work through at the same time. So you're doing it as you go. As I said, create a document and format with your headings from the format overview. Attend or watch the week three tutorial, lots of information about the assessment there. Identify tool three characteristics or contextual factors which may be influencing the autistic person and this is based on the information from module one. Select one behavior to focus on in your report and define that behavior module two. We look at defining behavior so keep that in mind. Summarize an analyzer data about the behavior from the provided case study again module two. Make a hypothesis about the need being met by the behavior and why you think so. And again this will be done in module two and then what further information do you need and why. So you know I really I encourage you to work through the case study as you're working through the modules. Some writing tips consider your audience as I mentioned is it the parents or teachers use APA seven referencing and appropriate in text citations. Adhere to the word limit use subheadings to organize your writing and guide your reading so the format gives you a good idea of subheadings and the options to use your document build it to plan your writing. There are the supports in the tutorial like week three tutorial begin there. Microsoft teams discussion there's a channel for assessment so that's a good spot to go. Course materials as information in the course to support you. The other thing is that just basic things about getting support for your writing and your work. Things you can see that on in this supports under things to know for a successful trimester under on your canvas site under getting started. And under your assessment overview tab there is what you need to know about assessment at Griffith and the supports that they provide. So there's a lot of services and supports there for you. So there things to think about and to look at and to do I do as I mentioned there is a lot of data to work your way through and it can initially. On first look feel a little overwhelming but if you pace yourself do it as you go through the course align you know the different data collection with the tutorial the lecture on that topic and work through it that way then it becomes a lot more manageable. And you can hopefully a lot less stressful but a lot more manageable and you can get a better understanding of what you're doing. So do I do hope you enjoy the assessment I know that sounds a bit of an odd comment but you know it's a great learning experience and so really do take it on and see what you can learn. And think about it when you're doing it how does this relate maybe to some of the things that you're seeing in your own context.

So again there will be assessment channel on the team site where you can put up questions and ask questions about the assessment if you need to but do listen to the tutorials. Do attend the tutorials if you can't listen to the recording and do look at the course videos because they all have helpful information for you.
