Assessment Overview:

For the third assessment, students will select two short-answer questions to respond to; these questions are from Modules 9-11, drawn from the third part of the course, Part C: An Introduction to Criminology. These questions have been designed to assess your academic skills in analysing. Here we are assessing students' ability to analyse a given issue for which there is no clear answer. For these questions, students will apply their analytical skills to a criminal justice problem which has shades of grey, requiring a response that balances competing perspectives. Students are expected to consider these multiple aspects, craft an argument, and defend it. This task thus requires that students perform a careful analysis of the problem that they are addressing.

Question:

Students should select TWO of the following questions, drawn from the course content delivered in Modules 9-11 inclusive:

Module 1: Short-Answer (Policing and Crime Prevention):

Many law enforcement agencies use predictive policing to inform staffing levels and patrol allocations. Some of these efforts have been successful, but they have also stirred up controversy. What are the prospects and pitfalls of using this kind of approach in policing?

Module 2: Short-Answer (Courts and Restorative Justice):

The use of victim impact statements has produced a fiery debate among scholars and justice officials: advocates argue that the process provides important benefits for primary victims and the broader community, while critics suggest that the process introduces biases that can substantially disadvantage the offender. Weighing up these pros and cons, do you think Australian courts should use victim impact statements? Contextualize and justify your response.
