1. Details of assessment task 1

The business environment (climate) is constantly changing, and it is becoming more
and more complex. Organizations, private and public, are under pressures that force
them to respond quickly to changing conditions and to be innovative in the way they
operate. Such activities require organizations to be agile and to make frequent and
quick strategic, tactical, and operational decisions, some of which are very complex.
Making such decisions may require considerable amounts of relevant data,
information, and knowledge.

In this task, you must complete the following 4 exercises by making critical analysis
and comparing related concepts, techniques, and applications, which have been
covered in the learning content in the first 4 weeks.

Exercise 1.

Managers usually make decisions by following a four-step process(see textbook and
slides). Critically examine these steps in the scenario of a small business company.

Exercise 2.

Most companies and some organizations have downloadable demos or trial versions
of their software products on the Web so that you can copy and try them out on your
own computer. Others have online demos. Choose one that provides decision support,
try it out, and write a short report about it. Include details about the intended purpose
of the software, how it works, and how it supports decision making.

Exercise 3.

Analyse the necessary conditions for AI to be able to automate decision making and
give an example of the use of AI in retail and its impact on the understanding of
customer behaviour and organizing’s related decision strategies.

Exercise 4.

Using visualization data set: product–sales–customer.xlsx (available from Week 4
in Moodle) and visualizing the data.

In this exercise, you need to critically assess the visualization shown above and answer the following the questions:

• Are colours used effectively? Analyse the reasons that you provide.
• Does this visualization encourage any misperceptions? Analyse the reasons that you provide.
• How could this visualization be improved? Offer specific suggestions.
