Coursework Aims
The aim of these exercises is to assess your understanding of the theories and empirical techniques covered in the Labour Economics module from week 1 to week 10.
Marking Criteria
In answering the coursework, you will need to apply the theoretical and empirical concepts covered during the lectures and tutorials. Always use correct labour economics terminology and ensure your answers are grounded in the relevant theory. For the empirical questions, be precise in your explanations.
I will evaluate your knowledge and understanding of labour economics concepts. This includes your ability to familiarise yourself with these concepts and explain the reasons behind expected behaviours using economic theory. Additionally, I will assess whether you have arrived at the correct solutions and whether you can clearly explain why those solutions are valid.
You will also be evaluated on how well you communicate your results. Your answers should be well-structured, with fluency between different parts and consistency in writing and style.
Your empirical findings should be presented in tables formatted for publication, using the Stata commands discussed during the tutorials. I will review and mark your do-file, which must include comments providing a detailed explanation of each command.

Coursework Task
Question 1) In class, we discussed that the free entry and exit of workers and firms in a competitive labour market leads to a single wage equilibrium.
- Using the theories covered in class, explain why wage differences are observed in the labour market despite this principle. (600 words, 35 marks)
- Based on your explanation in part (a), specify a wage equation which allows you to test the discussed theories. Carefully justify your choice of explanatory variables with reference to the relevant theoretical framework. (150 words, 15 marks)
- Estimate the wage equation using MainData.dta dataset, report the results in a table, and interpret the coefficients. Discuss whether the results align with your theoretical expectations from part (a). (150 words, 15 marks)
- Discuss any limitations of this model. (300 words, 25 marks)
- Include the complete code from your do-file here. Ensure each line of code includes comments to clearly explain its purpose. Be sure to include all lines from your do-file. (10 marks)
