2000 words maximum (not including footnotes and bibliography). Material exceeding the word limit will not be read and will not be taken into account when assessing your work.

Overview

You are a legal advisor at the Office of International Law within the Commonwealth Attorney-General’s Department. This task requires you to produce a research paper for your supervisor.

What you will do

1. Complete a fully referenced research paper providing legal advice on the relevant issues for the topic outlined below. See the Criterion Referenced Assessment (CRA) sheet for the assessment criteria and allocation of marks.

2. Formal requirements:

a) Formatting:

i. You must use Arial font in 11 point for this assessment.

ii. Use 1.5 line spacing.

iii. Headings and sub-headings may be formatted in bold or underline, in any sensible combination. You may wish to number your sections/parts/headings.

b) AGLC 4 must be fully complied with for all citations.

c)   Please note your academic integrity obligations carefully. Any use of generative AI tools (such as ChatGPT) to complete or contribute to your research paper will constitute a breach of academic integrity.

d) Include a bibliography of all sources referred to in your research paper.

e) The maximum word length permitted is 2000 words.  This includes all text in your assignment document except for footnotes and the bibliography.  

3. Submission:

a) All students must upload this assessment via the submission link on the LLB350 Canvas site by 11.59pm (Australian Eastern Standard Time) on Monday 24th April 2023.

b) Academic staff cannot advise on any issues or problems in relation to uploading your assessment or in completing your assessment on time.

c) Academic staff are unable to consider any requests for extensions. Please follow the relevant Law School policy in relation to any such request.

4. This assessment item is worth 40% of the total marks in LLB350.

What you will submit

You will upload your Research Paper as a single document, via the Submission Link on the LLB350 Canvas site.  

There is no need to attach a CRA sheet or Assessment Acknowledgement form.

Resources and Useful References

You will be introduced to basic elements of the relevant law in the Week 1-6 Workshops. However, you will need to carry out further research into the specific legal issues relevant to the topic. This may include consulting a range of sources including:

· international court and/or tribunal decisions

· United Nations documents

· official statements from states (located via media articles or press releases)

· academic literature e.g. monographs, journal articles

· quality international law blogs and other reliable web-based sources.
