Maggie is a programme manager for DACSSA, an independent and confidential service for individuals. Her multiple roles include keeping abreast of current issues in disability, teasing out trends & what this means at policy level, reporting data back to the board and CEO, helping to ascertain how this links back to organisational strategy. She acts as a conduit between clients and the board, so that strategising and prioritising of what is important for people with disability can be understood to affect chnage at systemic levels of operation.
I am not interested in this role. I have worked in disability for 32 years and am looking for something different. I have worked collaboratively in an integrated way with many teams over the years, largely advocating for people with autism within the school systems (e.g., curriculum adaptation and teaching methodology).
The standard practice that closely aligns with Maggie's work is: social justice and human rights. She is working to achieve human welfare policies and programmes for those with disability, seeking to prevent negative discrimination and oppression, as well as maximising respect and fairness for this group by being a "voice" at higher levels of change.
Maggie works for DACSSA, she is a programme manager in this organisation and her role consists mainly on advocating for people living with disabilities. She also helps clients with the system navigation, this means she guides and supports people finding the way in different government systems. Although this is a role I could be interested in the future, is not something I would like to pursue now.
Relating Maggies interview to the reading, Maggie explains how ethical dilemmas are part of her work, and how she needs to make complex decisions involving other peoples lives. Maggie must prioritise people needs and advocate for them when meeting with the CEO.
One practice standard that relates to Maggie's interview is number six. Maggie needs to make professional decisions based on holistic assessments of needs. Furthermore, as part of her role, she advocates for groups of people living with disabilities prioritising her goals, needs and preferences.
