ESSAY TOPIC REQUIREMNT:
- The architectural project and its contextual relationships.
Choose an architect or practice whose work is covered by this course and discuss one or more of their design projects, drawings or urban proposals focusing on how examples of their design agendas (design ideas) and the cultural context is translated and expressed in their work. Analyse this work relative to their overall body of work and also against relevant practices of the time and their key projects.
This question asks you to focus on design ideas agendas and how they engage with relevant historical context, cultural values or theoretical concerns of the time. It then asks you to explore and discuss how they inform the architectural qualities of the design. This could involve discussing - where relevant - an analysis of compositional -
formal and spatial - design languages, surface and ornament and material fabrication. Note, compositional design languages could be for example, re-workings, misappropriations or translations of the classical orders, of local references and contexts, or geometries and formal systems specific to a period, or local artistic and
cultural influences and works.
Consider in conclusion, what contribution your chosen projects makes to the wider architectural discourse.
Note: Be selective with your choices. You are aiming for careful detailed discussion and developed essay and analysis rather than broad general overviews and descriptions.
