Assignment topic choice 1

Amy 13-year-old student enrolled in year 8 Since commencing high school this year, Amy’s academic results have dropped significantly over the past few months. She has lost interest in completing schoolwork and participates little in class. She regularly misses days from school and, when she is there, frequently isolates herself at break times and asks to go home as she is feeling ill. Amy reports that she feels chest pain and difficulty breathing. Her teachers are concerned as to whether there may be any physical or mental health issues impacting Amy’s presentation at school. Amy's mother reported that Amy was born prematurely and has been identified with developmental delays and learning issues. During her early years of life, she had witnessed verbal and physical violence. Amy’s mother is quite concerned about her situation as Amy is more isolated and avoids any interactions

Using Amy’s presentation as a prompt, you are required to discuss critically:

  • Two childhood (2) factors that may affect the mental health of a person over
    their lifespan (Approximately 300 words)
  • Three (3) essential skills a nurse will use to engage with a person experiencing
mental illness. You must include why these skills are essential and provide an
example of the behaviour, question, or statement the nurse would use
    (Approximately 600 words)
  • The role of a mental health nurse in providing collaborative care for people
experiencing mental illness and their families /carers. Discuss one (1) strategy
the nurse could use to support families and/or carers (Approximately 600
    words)

Your response must use a range of national and international contemporary literature.
The response must include an introduction (Approximately 150 words) and a
conclusion (Approximately 150 words). (Total word count – 1800 +/-)

Assignment topic choice 2

Russel
55-yearold
Farmer
Russel always worked in his family business as a farmer, planting and harvesting crops. He never married, and now he lives on his own following the death of his mother, who had a diagnosis of schizoaffective disorder. Russel was diagnosed with schizophrenia when he was 19 years old and had many admissions to the inpatient units. His treatment included prolonged periods of seclusion and physical restraint and several treatments of Electroconvulsive Therapy. Currently, Russel sees his GP every month and is being managed in the community for schizophrenia, type 2 diabetes, hyperlipidaemia, chronic obstructive airway disease and arthritis in his left hip. He is reluctant to agree to a hip replacement because he does not want to be admitted to the hospital due to trauma associated with his past hospital admissions.

Using Russel’s experience as a prompt, you are required to discuss critically:
• Two (2) contributing factors relating to mental illness (Approximately 300 words)
• A nurse's role in using therapeutic engagement skills to de-escalate a client
experiencing mental illness (Approximately 600 words)
• The importance of Trauma-informed practices and Recovery-oriented principles
within mental health services and discuss the role of a nurse in using these
principles to support people experiencing mental illness and their families /carers
(Approximately 600 words)

Your response must use a range of national and international contemporary literature.
The response must include an introduction (Approximately 150 words) and a
conclusion (Approximately 150 words). (Total word count – 1800 +/-)

The following steps are provided as a guide to develop your assessment.

Step 1: Choose your scenario from one of the two options: Amy, Russel
Step 2: Carefully read the marking rubric and understand the criteria and marks
allocated to each section
Step 3: Highlight and/or annotate the chosen scenario, analysing:
- key points that may be of interest related to the discussion points
Step 4: Review contemporary peer-reviewed literature on topics related to the
discussion points you need to respond to (e.g.: factors affecting mental health,
essential skills for therapeutic relationships etc). Only ‘2 relevant websites are
allowed’ and ‘use peer-reviewed journal articles relevant to the topic of choice, and
‘the unit textbooks.
Step 5: As you search, continue to revisit your chosen scenario and the discussion
points you need to respond to. This is to ensure that your response aligns with the
required tasks.
Step 6: Respond to each discussion point as supported by the research you
conducted in Step 3. Focus on critical language rather than descriptive. You need to
compare and contrast the available literature on the discussion topics, and you may
give examples using the scenario.
Step 7: Proofread the whole response to ensure there is a logical progression of
ideas and content flows from one paragraph to another with clear linking sentences
present. Ensure the referencing style (APA 7th) is correctly followed and rectify any
spelling and grammar errors.
