This assessment is made up of 2 Parts:
Part 1:
2,500-word essay (worth 70%) Discuss how a preceptor / mentor would develop learning, teaching and assessment strategies to support a nursing student, or new member of staff, achieve successful learning outcomes in a clinical learning environment.
Part 2:
1,000-word reflective essay (worth 30%). Discuss how the learning gained from studying this module could be applied to your role as a preceptor / mentor to support a nursing student, or new member of staff, achieve successful learning outcomes in your clinical learning environment.
Part 1 Essay
Student Guidance
1. Introduction:
(200 words) 10%
Provide a brief outline of the writing content, presented in the main body of the essay.
No references are required in the introduction.
2.Main Body of Essay: Incorporates four sections A B C D

Introduce the role of the preceptor/mentor in the clinical learning environment, and discuss key qualities that support effective learning, teaching and assessment. (500 words)
Discuss the impact of the relationship between preceptor/mentor and learner; and identify potential impacts of the clinical environment upon learning experience. (500 words)
Briefly describe Flemings (2006) VARK learning styles and one learning theory, and then critically discuss how these can be applied to support learning, teaching, and assessment.
Choose one learning theory from the list below: (500 words)
Knowles theory of andragogy,
Pedagogy
Banduras social cognitive theory
Behavioural learning theory
Discuss strategies that support effective assessment in the clinical learning environment. Choose two strategies from the following list: (500 words)
objective setting
use of SMART approach to objective setting
facilitating open and timely feedback
formative and summative assessment
Citations (evidence) are required throughout the main body of the essay; this demonstrates the evidence you have read to support your learning.
3. Conclusion (300 words) 10%
The conclusion should summarise key learning points from the main body of the essay.
No references are required in the conclusion.
Part 2 Reflective Essay
(1000 words) 30%
Write a personal reflection identifying how learning from this module has developed your understanding and practice, as a preceptor / mentor for nursing students, or new members of staff, in your clinical area. Identify opportunities for change in the Now what, part of your reflection.
Complete a SWOT analysis of your clinical learning environment and use this information as the basis for your reflection.
Use Bortons (1970) reflective model to guide the writing of your reflective essay Use the headings What, So What, Now what.
This section is to be written in the 1st personNo references are required in the reflective essayPlease include your SWOT analysis as an appendix.
5. References Use APA 7th style to write your citations within your text, and present the reference list at the end of the Main Body of Essay. There is guidance in the Academic skills section in Moodle about referencing.
Remember to ensure all references cited in your text are written in full in the reference list at the end of the essay.
The reference list is not included in your word count.
Avoid plagiarism, by using the Turnitin drop box for checking your essay originality.
Aim for approximately 25-30 references for the Part 1 Essay.

6. Presentation Ensure you complete and submit the essay within the assessment template provide.
Ensure accurate grammar & spelling and adherence to the word count.
Use Arial formatting, Font size 12, and 1.5 line spacing.
7. Appendices Include a SWOT Analysis of your clinical learning environment for students / new members of staff as an appendix.
