Identify your chosen scenario, key interpersonal communication strategies, skills and approaches that support therapeutic communication between individuals. In addition, the references to support the relevant concept of care for the chosen scenario.

Body (800 words including references)

Provide an analysis of the ineffective communication between the individuals in the chosen scenario.

Explain strategies, skills and approaches that best support therapeutic communication between the nurse and patient in the chosen scenario, to achieve the best patient outcomes.

Discuss the inclusion of cultural awareness and self-awareness in the provision of therapeutic communications with the patient in the scenario chosen.

Describe the relevance of literacy skills in the provision of effective communications in nursing practice.

*Refer to scholarly literature (references) to support your developed knowledge and understanding of the scenario with analysis, discussions and explanations in your essay.

Scenario

You are completing a 2 week clinical placement in a residential aged care facility. Charlie is an 82 year old male in a residential care facility and is of Pakistan descent, who is a vegetarian and wears dentures. Charlie has been in the facility for 18 months and is has just discovered his soft diet at times contains lumpy brown particles. He directly asks you, Nurse, this looks like meat. I hope it isnt! I cant eat this because I am a vegetarian. You reply, Oh I didnt know you are a vegetarian as I saw last week that you have received and eaten this meal before which is pureed meat and I didnt read it anywhere in your care plan either. With that, Charlie looks at you with a look of surprise, his eyes widen, and his facial colour becomes slightly pale. He then yells at you, What! Are you trying to kill me! I cant eat meat! It is against my religious beliefs. In anger, Charlie pushes the plate away and it lands on the floor and the food spills across the chair and floor, spraying onto your uniform. This outburst takes you completely by surprise as he is usually a very quiet and softly spoken man. How would you respond?
