NURS5097 Primary Health Care
Assessment 3: Primary Health Care and Equity Report (60%)
Students will apply the principles of PHC to identify the key service requirements in a vulnerable population group of their choice.
1. Choose one population group who are at risk of poor health outcomes. This population could be any group that experiences social marginalisation, including: women; children and young people; people who identify as Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander; refugees: or people with chronic illnesses.
2. Using population health data and contemporary literature, justify your choice of population group.
3. Discuss each principle of PHC in relation to the health needs of your chosen population. Differentiate how the PHC approach would impact the population compared to the traditional illness focused approach to care. Please include in your discussion policies, funding structures and systems, health professional education, status and preparation, and public perceptions.
4. Identify and critically discuss management strategies or principles, based on evidence from contemporary literature, to engage your chosen population group, enable them more equitable access to PHC, and improve their health outcomes.
