OB Literature Review (30 marks, including Milestone)

Due Date: Friday 14 October, 4:30pm AEST Submission via link on Moodle

Word Count Requirement: 2,000 words (+/- 10%, excluding reference list)

The aim of this assessment is to develop your research skills in independently investigating and reviewing a specific OB research area and to cultivate your ability to relate and apply OB knowledge to your daily work and life. You are required to pick one topic from the list provided in Appendix 1 of this document and conduct a thorough review of the research literature related to the topic.

The topics provided are important OB concepts that have shaped theory and practice in management. Pick a topic that you are most interested in and that you think relates closely to your ideal career path. You need to identify and review the key peer-reviewed academic journal articles related to the topic.

Appendix 2 provides a list of top tier management journals. You may also use the ABDC Journal List (in the Literature Review Assignment Resources folder) to assess journal quality, where A* is the highest ranking. Please note that theses lists are not exhaustive and you can use articles from journals that are not on these list. However, it is a good idea to use papers from these journals if they relate to your topic, as higher quality research is usually published in more prestigious journals. Number of citations is also usually a good indicator of how influential the article is; 100+ citations is considered highly-cited, 1000+ likely indicates a very influential paper. Youll also want to focus on more recently published articles, but do not exclude influential papers just because they are old.

The literature review has three components: conceptualisation, research summary and practical application.

In conceptualisation you need to provide a clear understanding of the focal concept. How it is defined? Has the definition evolved over time, and if so, how? Are there competing definitions? Why is this concept important? How is it conceptually different from similar concepts?

In research summary you need to provide an overview of the major research findings regarding the antecedents and consequences of the focal concept. That is, what factors can influence/strengthen/weaken your focal concept, and what important outcomes does your focal concept lead to?

Finally, in practical application you need to relate the focal concept and the existing findings to your daily life and create a specific application plan. For example, what propels you to consider the concept worth applying or avoiding? How do the findings on the topic challenge your existing beliefs? What specific actions do you need to take in order to effectively apply/avoid the concept? What opportunities might benefit you and what obstacles and difficulties might deter you from following through with these actions?

Please see Appendix 3 for the specific criteria with which your literature review will be evaluated.

Please follow APA Style (6th or 7th edition; page 34 of the Monash Q Manual) throughout your literature review. The literature review should be around 2000 words (+/- 10%) excluding references. You should include at least 10 peer-reviewed academic journal articles in your reference list using APA style. You may use books or book chapters for the review but these must account for no more than 10% of your references and you must still use at least 10 peer-reviewed journal articles. You may not use internet sources such as websites or blogs.

Supporting resources

The university has provided learning resources for those who are not familiar with writing a literature review; these resources are provided in the Literature Review Assignment Resources folder. Furthermore, if you are not familiar with working with academic journal articles, please refer to Monash Business Schools Q Manual for step by step instructions (Q manual also can be found on Moodle).

Due Date: Week 11, Friday 14 October, 4:30pm

You are required to submit the final draft of your literature review on Moodle by Friday 4:30pm of Week 11. Please see below for specific details on how to submit your document through Moodle. The tutor will evaluate your assignment using the marking guide (see Appendix 3).

Submission requirement

Overall, it is important to ensure your assignment is professionally presented. Please ensure all your work is double-spaced, size 12, Times New Roman font, and free from grammatical and spelling errors. You deny yourself marks by handing in work that has not been proof-read prior to submission. Your reference list should be on a new page at the end of your assignment. This list should contain only those items which you have directly cited in the body of your assignment. You need to use the APA (6th or 7th)style to format your references. There is no need for you to provide DOI numbers as part of your reference list.

Please submit your document without a coversheet to the correct submission link on Moodle (named Submit your Literature Review here!). Please make sure you submit everything in one file. A Turnitin similarity score will be automatically calculated for your document. Please ensure that your document is submitted with a similarity score lower than 15% before the submission due date in Week 11. Turnitin scores above 15% will not be automatically penalised, but they will be closely scrutinised as plagiarism is more likely to have occurred with scores above 15%. You are not required to submit a hardcopy separately (we will grade the document that you have submitted through the Turnitin link on Moodle). Late submissions will be penalized in accordance with university policy (i.e., 10% of total possible marks off for each 24-hour period late, starting immediately after the deadline, up to 7 days). You will receive your grade and feedback from the same submission link. Please see the marking guide in Appendix 3 below. The marking guide is integrated in the link on Moodle so you can see your grade and specific feedback on your submission immediately after the tutors have finished grading.

Milestone submission (due Friday 23 September, 4:30pm)

To keep you on track with the literature review, you will be asked to submit a milestone in which you (a) state the topic you have chosen, (b) list 5-10 or more references in APA format that you will be using for your review, and (c) for 5 of the references, write a 1-2 sentence summary of the paper listed.

The milestone is worth 1 mark of the possible 30 marks for the literature review. To receive full credit, you only need to list a topic, 5 references, and a 1-2 sentence summary of each of those references. In other words, you will not gain or lose marks for listing more than 5 references, but doing so may help you keep track of relevant articles. Writing a 1-2 sentence summary for 5 references will also ensure that you have identified and understand the findings of articles that are relevant to your topic

You are encouraged to find your articles well in advance of the literature review deadline so you dont save it for the last minute. The milestone is purposely due three weeks before the the literature review deadline so that you are incentivised to begin the assessment in good time. Follow through on the momentum you build by completing this milestone and continuing to work on your literature review.
