1.Nursing Philosophy
As a certified nurse, I hold the conviction that nursing is an esteemed vocation that demands unwavering dedication and a commitment to delivering superior care to patients. It stands on the foundations of empathy, honesty, and continuous education (Waldow, 2022). Throughout my academic journey as a nursing student, I have come to understand the significance of adopting a comprehensive nursing strategy that takes into account the physical, emotional, and social health of patients. I have also understood the importance of respecting the cultural and spiritual beliefs of the patients while planning the treatment strategies. In addition to this, I also aim towards providing a supportive environment so that patients feel comfortable in sharing their medical concerns. My primary objective is to understand the diversity of the cultural backgrounds of the patients and address their medical issues with utmost respect and dignity. Also, I value the suggestions provided by my senior colleagues and emphasize towards providing a high quality medical care.

For this, I will enroll in a certification program offered by Australian college of critical care nurses (ACCN) based on the techniques required in advanced life support (ACCCN, 2024). I will organize my study schedule accordingly and work on the priority tasks to complete this certification. In addition to this, I will do extensive research and retrieve relevant study materials which will provide me additional assistance in learning the required knowledge and skills for advanced life support.
To ensure the implementation of the skills related to advanced life support, I will practice these skills in the clinical placements to enhance my expertise in handling emergency medical situations requiring immediate life support.
For monitoring my progress, I will regularly check my assessment scores and feedbacks from my tutor to identify the areas which require more improvement.
This goal aligns with NMBA standard 3 Maintains the capability of practice which states that a registered nurse should have the required skills for ensuring the safety of the patient (NMBA, 2016).
Goal-2: To enhance my knowledge on pediatric care and learn necessary skills for handling such patients in the hospital.
The main purpose of this goal is to expand my expertise for providing personalised care to the children by enhancing my knowledge on pediatric care. This will ultimately help me in suggesting the appropriate treatments for providing emergency medical care to children.
For this, I will enroll in a certification program related to pediatric medical care offered by the Royal Childrens Hospital in Australia (Royal Childrens Hospital, 2024). It will address all the medical interventions required for providing optimum level of care to the pediatric patients. In addition to this, I will organize my schedule in a manner that I get ample time to learn the skills required for handling pediatric patients.
To implement these skills in the clinical scenario, I will ensure that i manage most of the pediatric patients and apply my knowledge of providing medical care to such patients.
To track my progress in pediatric care, I will take regular feedbacks from the pediatric patients and their families regarding the medical assistance provided to them.
This goal aligns with the NMBA standard 5 Develops a plan for nursing practice which aims at planning and communicating the treatment strategies according to the requirements of the pediatric patients (NMBA, 2016).
5.Selection Criteria
Opening: The importance of gaining better knowledge and understanding about mental health and its associated issues is vital for nursing students within health care settings. Awareness of mental health issues and addressing clients concerns should be a key priority in applying powerful communication skills.
Situation: During my initial days of nursing handover as a nursing student in St. Johns Hospitals Mental Health Unit, I dealt with a mentally disturbed patient. Her age is 65 years and she has been currently dealing with some noteworthy mentally ill symptoms like sudden panic attacks from the past three months. She is also having hallucinations, loneliness, and stress at times.
Task: I was allocated to take care of the elderly patient noticing her basic mental health signs and providing her effective care during my evening shift. I was even given the responsibility to evaluate and record any deterioration in her mental health state like occurrences of any unstable behavior or panic attacks.
Action: The foremost action I undertook to tackle the mental health challenge of the client was to actively engage in conversations with her by conducting therapeutic counseling sessions. I assured her that she had belief and trust in my care process. I was responsible enough to keep the patient calm during any adverse emotions like huge stress and anxiety feelings which at a few times escalated to panic attacks (Mansouri & Darvishpour, 2024). Sometimes, I took her for an evening walk to make her happy, bring positivity to her mental state, and keep her both physically and mentally strong. Even I suggested some breathing exercises that she can do regularly during her leisure time.
Result: I was capable of producing better and positive outcomes for the patient by applying Standard 1 and Standard 6 of the NMBA registered nursing practice helped me to recognize, evaluate, and deliver nursing practice in a safe and suitable manner (NMBA, 2016). The patients episodes of panic attacks started reducing followed by attending the therapeutic sessions and performing breathing exercises. The patient obtained coping mechanisms to tackle her negative emotions efficiently and manage stress through self-care.
