It kills more women than breast cancer and more men that prostate cancer. More than 80% of strokes can be prevented.
Course objections:
- Identify determinants of health including social, cultural, biological and global factors. Identify a range of health promotion theories and strategies to promote the health of populations
- Explain and analyse the main contributors to the burden of disease in Australia and globally.
Task detail:
- Discuss epidemiology and social determinants of health related to stroke, paying particular attention to the disparity between regional and metropolitan areas.
- Additionally, you will discuss the significant disproportion in the incidence and prevalence of stroke in aboriginal and Torres Strait islander people
- Briefly discuss equity of access to emergency stroke, comparing rural and metropolitan regions, and the potential impacts this can have one the patient with consideration to the treatment, recovery, rehabilitation.
- You will also discuss the economic impacts of stroke with a focus on the health care system and society.
- Considering the modifiable risk factors associated with certain types of stroke, you will discuss the role paramedics can play in addressing these factors.
- This may include novel and non-traditional initiatives implemented and/or supported by paramedics.
- Finally, you will investigate and report on emerging pre-hospital technology that may reduce the time to definitive diagnosis and management of stroke patients living in regional Australia.
