QCD110 Research Report
Task:
"Reports are used to help make decisions or account for actions. Reports use research to make recommendations for action" (QUT cite/write, 2020, para. 2).
You are required to prepare the initial part of the final research report which responds to the scenario below. Your report must be based on relevant and current academic secondary research only, using resources accessed via the QUT library catalogue. You will use feedback on this task to produce a higher quality final research report.
Scenario:
Society acknowledges that education can greatly improve the quality of life for both communities and individuals. This knowledge allows people to see the world through new eyes which opens up previously unknown possibilities. Seeking higher education can develop this insight and reveal potential opportunities for future success. Furthermore, students should choose their preferred field of study based on their academic strengths, interests and future career goals. The 21st century has brought about an increase in the number of students seeking higher education opportunities in Australia, particularly due to the wide array of disciplines available at Australian universities.
In order to succeed in an Australian university, international students need to learn content knowledge. However, just as importantly students must also develop skills related to their chosen discipline. Additionally, research by Emblen-Perry (2019) confirms the value of integrating universal skills when encouraging students academic success. Many skills may be generic and therefore cross-disciplinary, while others are specific to particular faculties and must be developed to successfully complete the course of study.
QUT College management has contracted you to investigate four academic skills which Diploma students require to be successful in their chosen faculty. Your analysis requires you, as the researcher, to argue why your selected academic skills are the most important for students in your faculty. As part of your investigation the client, Mr Ken Beutel, Director QUT College, requires recommendations which will identify how these skills should be delivered to Diploma students.
Select one of the following faculties that you are currently studying at QUT College:
Business
Creative Industries
Engineering
Health Sciences
Information Technology

Explain the context and purpose of the report and justify using secondary evidence the importance of the semester topic. (1.0 Introduction).
Identify 4 academic skills (subtopics) that students require to be successful in your faculty area. Within each of the subtopics, identify two methods to show how students should perform this subtopic skill at university and justify using secondary evidence its importance for student faculty success. (2.0 Discussion).
Argue why one method within each subtopic skill is more important for success (3.0 Conclusions).
Develop recommendations that will assist the client to enhance these subtopic skills. (4.0 Recommendations).
Reflect on your work and gather peer feedback to improve the quality of your submission.

You are required to have at least 7 academic sources in your reference list.

1.0 Introduction
Background
Globalisation has had a dramatic influence on the way in which businesses achieve growth and market dominance. Corporate success now relies on institutions adopting practices to meet the demands of these new challenges. While organisations employ varied methods to increase success, employee performance is often acknowledged to be the most crucial. This is essential for both companies and individual workers to recognise, as strategies to enhance employee skills will directly relate to an organisations profits. Employees who can demonstrate effective communication skills are the driving force of any company. Moran et al. (2011) identify that for a company to have an advantage over their competition they must have workers who recognise and adopt superior communication competency. Ultimately, employees who enhance their communication ability will not only influence their individual success but also the success of the company they work for. ACME Business services sees this obligation as vital and because of this they are interested in ways to increase their employee success. This issue is of particular importance to Ms Yamada who has requested a report researching this topic, which is due for submission on 14th September 2019.
1.2 Purpose
The purpose of this report is to analyse the importance of communication skills that are required for success in *** industry. The client will then use this information to create professional development resources to improve this workplace competency.
2.0 Discussion
2.1 Feedback
Demonstrating effective feedback is a vital communication skill for the success of education professionals. Firstly, Webb (2014, p. 110) argues that feedback must be personal to gain the most benefit. Based on this evidence educators should develop this skill by targeting their feedback towards the individual needs of fellow teaching staff. Thisis an important aspect of working as many teachers rely on advice from colleagues to improve their performance. Promoting an open, trusting relationship can ensure the advice is valued when giving personal feedback. Often, reciprocal feedback strengthens this relationship. Therefore, a teacher who has this communication skill is likely to contribute to higher quality work being performed as well as increase the consistency of information for students. Secondly, evidence confirms that feedback must be 'ongoing', which ensures its value in the workplace (Schultz, 2015, p. 13). This is crucial for educators to recognise, as the checking of initial feedback can assess whether the advice was understood and acted upon. Educational professionals who demonstrate this method of communication often increase confidence among colleagues which promotes individual initiative. This can be reinforced by gradually increasing a colleagues ability to self-monitor and reduce their dependence on feedback from others. Therefore, feedback that is both personal and ongoing is a valuable communication skill which can increase the likelihood of success in the education profession.
2.2
2.3
2.4
3.0 Conclusions
3.1
While both aspects of feedbackcan achieve successful communication, research confirms that ongoing feedbacktends to be the most vital. The main reason is that teachers who receive consistent feedback are likely to be more secure in their own knowledge which leads to increased independence. Therefore, feedback that is ongoing is a valuable skill which can increase the likelihood of successful communication in the education industry.

Based on the discussion research and conclusions, the following recommendations are made to ACME Business Services:
