The purpose of the research proposal is to outline the topic area, the project aim and objectives and detail how you will meet those objectives. You really need to have done extensive reading within the subject area before you put your proposal together. Your proposal must convince your supervisor that:

  1. The research topic is relevant to your degree and has a strategic element

  1. The research topic is interesting and worthwhile studying, there is a clear rationale

  1. The research objectives are pitched at the right level (not descriptive, they seek to explore and explain)

  1. Your methods are appropriate to your objectives and will allow you to answer them

  1. That your design is ethically sound

  1. The plan of work to achieve your Aim is robust

Assessment Content

The format for the research proposal and reflective statement is detailed below and should be completed using Form B:

  • The Title or topic area of proposed study

  • The Aim of the study (i.e., what you hope to achieve by the end of your research)

  • The Objectives of your study (i.e., what you need to do to satisfy your Aim)

  • The Rationale for your study (i.e., why the research needs to be undertaken)

  • A brief Literature Review critically evaluating recent and relevant research which has addressed similar issue to those covered in your Aim and Objectives.

  • A concise outline of Research Methodology, including justification for choices in terms of Research Strategy and Research Design. (For example: Is the research applied (specific or general) or theoretical? Is the research completely new, a new application of existing research, a new insight into existing research, or a meta-analysis? What academic disciplines are involved?

Is it qualitative, quantitative, or both? Is it multi method, mono method, or mixed method? What data will you collect? How will you collect it? When do you intend to collect it? Where do you intend to collect it? From whom?)

  • A Project Plan showing the major activities you need to undertake to hand your dissertation on time.

  • A Reflective Statement reflecting on the process of preparing for and undertaking a significant piece of independent research using the ideas and concepts from the 7IM992 Research Methods module and your own reading and plan future development.
