Part A: Working Safely
1. Complete the following table to list a suitable risk control action you can perform for the identified hazard associated with each task. If needed, ensure you list the PPE necessary for the task. Part B: Supporting Others to Work Safely
1. Your Head Nurse has asked you to prepare an information session for all the junior nurses on handling sharps safely. What are 5 key pieces of information you can provide them on how to handle sharps safely? List them, including a method to safely recap the needle. (2.1, 2.3, 3.3) (2.3, 3.3, KE, PE)
2. Youre out in the cat ward and notice the kennel hand is cleaning a cage with disinfectant. The following picture is depicting what you are seeing. What is one thing you can advise them so they working safer? (2.2, 3.3) (3.3, KE, PE)

Part C: Making the Workplace Safer
1. Youre in the ward area and notice that one of the wall taps is constantly leaking and leaving a puddle on the floor. What actions are you going to do immediately to alert others to the hazard, and how can you ensure the hazard is removed permanently? (1.3, 3.1, 4.3)(1.5, 2.4, 3.1, 3.2, PE)

This is a nurse that has been trained in the use of the autoclave. There are safe work procedures in place, and the practice manager organizes for the autoclave to be serviced biannually and maintained as per the manufacturers instructions. All electrical cords are in sound condition and not compressed in any way and are annually tagged and tested. If any faults are identified with the autoclave, the service technician is called immediately and the autoclave is removed from service until the fault is rectified. You can presume the autoclave is functioning as normal.
Now complete the following Checklist as part of a workplace inspection that your supervisor has asked you to participate in. Base this on what you saw in the video and the information provided in the scenario above.
3.Apply the Hierarchy of Risk Control against the way the nurse is handling the autoclave packs. Keep in mind, when an autoclave has finished a cycle, both the autoclave and the contents are quite hot. If there is not an option at one stage of the hierarchy, you can select no and move to the next one. (4.4)
- List two administrative controls (that are not PPE) that you could use to ensure staff are working safely with the autoclave when removing packs.
- What personal protective equipment (PPE) could be provided for staff to work safely when removing the hot packs from the autoclave?
Part D: Emergency Situations (5.1, 5.2) (4.1, 4.2, KE)
Scenario A: INTRUDER AND ROBBERY
Your last clients of the day are in consultation with the veterinarian and just about to come out to settle their account. You are preparing to close for the day, emptying bins and tidying the reception area.
A person rushes through the door and into the clinic. As you go to greet them you notice they are holding a knife. They shout at you Give me everything, take all the money out and give it to me, or Ill use this knife. The person is holding the knife up and thrusting it toward your face.
- What actions will you take in response to the robbers request?
- Discuss why you wouldnt confront the robber. What hazard might this pose?
- Once the robber has left, what is the first thing you would do and why?
- Who will you alert about the robbery? When would you alert them and why?
- Your colleagues are nervous, and excitedly chatting about what just occurred. They ask you what happened and are recounting what they saw. How would you respond to this?
Scenario B: FIRE & EVACUATION
You are walking to the dog ward with your cleaning trolley as one of the patients has diarrhoea in their cage when you notice a smokey smell. Approaching the open door to the ward you see smoke and that the wooden storage shelf in the ward is burning (where the newspapers are kept). You are the only staff member in the area and must act quickly in response to the new situation.
1. What is the first priority you will consider in this scenario?
2. How will you raise the alarm to alert other staff?
3. When responding to the fire, how would you prioritise the following actions?
- safety of pets,
- controlling the fire,
- your safety,
- alerting other people in the building,
- calling emergency services.
4. When calling OOO, what information do you need to provide and when should you hang up?
5. When would you attempt to move the dogs in the ward?
6. On your way to the evacuation point, you notice a junior nurse running back to the ward to save the patients. What is your immediate action, and what would you do to help coach her inappropriate action after everyone is safe?

Part E: Completing an Incident Report (1.5)(2.3)
You have just accidently cut your left index finger when removing a scalpel blade from the handle. Luckily, the cut is only small and not too deep. Complete the incident report form below. This can either be completed with your real workplace details, or you can make up your own details. Keep as many details real and accurate as possible. Were assessing your ability to complete the form fully and with the right detail.
