Sociolinguistic Analysis Research Paper Writing
- Subject Code :
LING2219
- Country :
Australia
Goal This task is aimed at a sociolinguistic analysis that seeks to answer the general research question:
"What heritage languages do migrants to Australia bring with them? And what social variables correlate with language maintenance, loss, and/or obtained?"
Data Your data for this analysis is a set of data which Loy will provide in an Excel spreadsheet
The task requires you to collect three types of data from 1 participant only.
1. Demographic Survey
o You will be asked to conduct a survey with your participant pertaining their social and linguistic background. The participant's responses need to be entered into Qualtrics. The questions in the survey will be discussed during the lecture in Week 7.
2. Language Portrait o You will be provided with an outline of a human portrait, which you will then ask your participant to colour based on their languages. Which colour they associate with which language is entirely up to them. This will be explained further in the lecture.
3. Semi-structured Interview o Based on your participant's response to data number 2, you will then be asked to conduct a semi-structured interview with them. You will be provided with the essential questions, which you can add to depending on your participant's responses. The aim of this interview is to ask your participant why they associate a specific colour to one of their languages, and to allow them to explain how they have coloured their human portrait. The length of the interview is dependent on the number of languages your participant has. All languages that are represented in the portrait needs to be accounted for in the interview for this data to be considered complete.
4. Transcript o The transcript is simply the written version of the interview. A partial sample will be provided in the lecture.
