  • Country :

    Australia

Aim:

Grapes, a popular fruit species are used to make a variety of fresh, dried, and processed products, such as wine or vinegar. This makes grapes one of the most economically interesting commodities to produce and trade with. Due to its favourable location, geography and topography, Australia is among the top ten grape producing and exporting countries, attractive for new businesses. The aim of this assignment is to use a GIS for finding the most suitable location(s) in Western Australia for a new vineyard confirming to a set of spatial and non-spatial criteria as listed below.

Site location criteria

We are looking for a suitable site for a new vineyard in the area north of Perth – see in the Figure 1

SS-1698830983.jpg

There are several spatial and non-spatial criteria that determine the location of a site (or sites as you may find more) suitable for establishing a new vineyard:

• Topography:

  • Elevation: between 10-200m
  • Slope: up to 15% • Aspect: SE-S-SW (i.e. from 135-180, 180-225 degrees)

• Other:

  • Not on Aboriginal Heritage Site.
  • 5km from the coastline.

Further requirements for the map content:

• Water bore: display water bores inside or close (within 250m) to the site.

• Soil capability for vineyard: display high capability for vineyard (>50%) in your map.

• Geodetic survey marks nearby (select those that are within 500m) – this is information is for the surveyors who will delineate the boundary of the new vineyard.

For your information, there are few requirements to climate for a suitable vineyard as well, such as those on rainfall (650-900mm per year) or temperature average in Jan/July (20-23°C). However, since our location of interest is to be in Western Australia, these are already satisfied (you can verify this here), and no GIS action is required to ensure these in the site selection process.

Data

You will have to find data you need for finding the suitable location as specified above. Some tips for where to look for data:

• DataWA (https://data.wa.gov.au/) – wealth of free and open data (e.g. for vineyard land capability)

• SLIP – contains all data that are open per login on DataWA (e.g. dataset with water bores, or geodetic survey marks). You should access this platform via Curtin Library – access the platform via this link.

• ELVIS (https://elevation.fsdf.org.au/) – for digital elevation model.

NOTE 1: currently the one-time selection extent is limited to approximately 1.5 degree by 1.5 degree of lat/lon, which is more than enough to search for a suitable site as per the conditions above.

NOTE 2: when selecting your area of interest, you might want to look for an area that is NOT built-up.

NOTE 3: The blue area in Figure 1 indicates the area where DEM of 5m is available, i.e. this is your area of interest.

Task 1: Obtain data

Specify the datasets you need and use existing data catalogues to source them. Some pointers are provided to you above, search for more if needed. Document the data requirements and the process of obtaining them in your report (max 1 page).

Task 2: Implement the geodata in a GIS

Use a GIS to implement the geodata obtained in Task 1 of this assignment. As a result, you will have a geodatabase or a collection of vector and raster files. When implemented, load necessary data into your project. Describe the process in your report (max 1 page).

Task 3: Using a GIS to find the suitable location for new vineyard in WA.

Use a GIS to find a suitable location for new vineyard in WA as per suitability requirements specified above. The expected outcome will be a map with the following content:

• Suitable location(s) for the new vineyard + information about its area.

• Basemap indicating the spatial context (you can use OSM for this).

• Water bores in or nearby suitable location(s).

• Geodetic survey marks around suitable location.
