Structural Analysis Assignment
Due 7 March 2025
The Problem:
A building is to be constructed with a moment frame at the centre to support lateral loads. A moment frame has fixed connections between the beams and columns, making it statically indeterminate. An elevation view of the building and typical structural plan is shown in Figure 1. You are tasked with analysing the frame (frame B, Figure 2) so that the design engineers can select appropriate member sizes for the frame.
As part of your analysis, you must determine the appropriate building loads.
You must use the variable allocated to you for your analysis.

The Analysis
- Determine gravity loads for the
- Determine suitable dead loads (permanent actions) for the building. State assumptions for all loads considered and where load values come Some things to consider when determining dead loads:
- beam weight (pick an appropriate material)
- slab weight (thickness of the slab, material)
- floor coverings
- ceiling coverings
- utilities
- HVAC
- Determine the appropriate live loads (imposed actions) for the
- building occupancy
- roof loads
- Combine loading for the entire frame, assuming the load combination 2G + 1.5Q
- Determine suitable dead loads (permanent actions) for the building. State assumptions for all loads considered and where load values come Some things to consider when determining dead loads:
- Determine the lateral loads for the building assuming earthquake loading and using the Equivalent Static Force analysis in NZS1170.5.
- Based on the specific location of the building
- Analyse the frame using slope deflection, moment distribution, or stiffness method considering gravity loads only.
- Draw axial, shear, and bending moment diagrams for the frame under gravity
- Analyse the frame using slope deflection, moment distribution, or stiffness method
considering gravity and lateral loads.
- Draw axial, shear, and bending moment diagrams for the frame under combined

The Write Up
Present your results in a well-formatted report. All work must be neat and easy to follow. Hand calculations MUST follow the formatting guidelines. The report must include:
- Your name and student number
- a description of your building (5pts)
- all of your assumptions (5 pts)
- a description of the loads you are using for the building and how they were determined (15 pts)
- a description of the analysis method you chose and why it is appropriate (5 pts)
- a discussion of the results and how the results would be used in selecting structural members for your building (15 pts)
- a discussion of the effects of sidesway on the analysis results (5 pts)
- axial, shear, and moment diagrams for the frame under gravity loads and combined loads (20 pts)
- a copy of your hand calculations in the appendix (30 pts)
