Summary and Purpose of Assessment

This is the third (3rd) of three (3) assessment tasks for this unit. This assessment task allows you to demonstrate the knowledge required to implement an individualised oral hygiene program

This assessment task, is based on the knowledge required to recommend and implement a prescribed oral health education program, as demonstrated in Assessment task 1: Clinical logbook.

Assessment Instructions

You are required to:

Conduct a presentation showcasing ONE (1) patient case that you have managed at your clinic (chose one case from Assessment Task 1)

The presentation must include:

a 15 - minute presentation on a clinical case using PowerPoint slides

one patient form your logbook (i.e., identified by their patient number)

provide the rationale and strategies for the prescribed oral health (OH) plan you implemented

evidence of any medical conditions present and how this impacted the OH plan

a reflection on what you would do differently and why or why not

refer to the detailed instructions in the section below

The presentation will be conducted in the classroom, where you will present to your Assessor and peers. Refer to Canvas for location details.

You will be assessed against the criteria as listed in the observation checklist in section B of this document

To achieve a satisfactory result, you will need to address all the criteria satisfactorily.

You must submit a hard copy of the presentation slides covering responses to ALL questions listed in this document. Print off 2 slides per page, staple them together and submit them to the Assessor with the assessment task attached. You MUST submit this directly to the Assessor on the day of the assessment. Once the assessor has reviewed the documents then:

Conditions for assessment

This is an individual task that you must complete with minimal support from others (allowed support would be questions related to the location of equipment needed, further explanation of the task requirements or explanation of assessment criteria)

You must submit all assessment evidence as instructed

You must complete the task within the maximum allowed duration

You must be observed undertaking this assessment task by a qualified assessor.

You can negotiate a suitable time and location for the assessment at least one (1) week prior to the assessment taking place

You are to make prior arrangements assessor at least one week prior to the assessment due date if you feel you require special allowance or allowable adjustment to this task

You must complete all the actions as per the performance criteria described in observation checklist Section B, to be deemed satisfactory in this assessment

You are to ensure your full and correct name and ID number is written on the student version of this assessment task (do not use nicknames or abbreviations)

You will receive a result of Satisfactory or Not Satisfactory.

If you are deemed not satisfactory, the feedback from your assessor, as noted in the Marking Guide, will indicate how you need to improve your work before re-submitting it.

You are entitled to one (1) resubmission of this assessment task if the first submission was deemed unsatisfactory.

All three assessment tasks for this unit must be deemed satisfactory for you to be deemed competent for this unit.

In certain circumstances students may be eligible for an assessment adjustment (e.g., a disability or long-term medical or mental health condition; an unavoidable employment, family, cultural, religious, or elite sporting commitment known in advance; other unexpected circumstance outside their control) or an extension of time.

If you are unable to meet the submission deadline as stated in Canvas then you need to consult with your assessor as soon as possible, preferably at least one (1) week prior to the assessment submission due date. Student Presentation Instructions:

Read the following instructions carefully as ALL the points below must be covered in your presentation:

Conduct a presentation with a minimum of 15 slides and a maximum of 20 slides, covering the following information.

Do not include the patients name to ensure compliance with confidentiality and privacy legislative requirements

1. Patient History

1.1 Gender and age. DO NOT include the patients name

1.2 Medical, dental, and social histories including side effects of medication that impact on oral health

1.3 Examination/clinical findings, including the odontogram and clinical photographs (block out the eyes)

1.4 Attitudes, beliefs, and motivations about their own oral health

2. Risk Assessment-

2.1 Identify risk factors for oral diseases (caries, periodontal health, soft tissue pathology including cancer)

2.2 Systemic disease or condition, physical or mental disability, and any associated medications and their potential impact on oral health

2.3 Social determinants of health that directly impact on oral health outcomes of your patient including health literacy

3. Tests -

3.1 Analysis of Plaque tests and results; and associated risk of dental caries and periodontal disease, including any improvement observed at follow-up visits (where applicable). Include test results for 2 occasions

3.2 Saliva test result and your interpretation including its role in maintaining oral health and buffering against acids and delivering minerals to the tooth surface.

3.3 Link level of risk to oral diseases

4. Dietary Analysis -

4.1 Identify any risks of nutritional deficiencies including hydration levels

4.2 Link possible nutritional gaps/deficiencies with risks for oral diseases (using the RDI Australian Dietary Guidelines)

4.3 Frequency of consumed cariogenic food products and their link to increased risk of dental caries

5. Oral health education: (Outline your plan for preventing and controlling disease)

5.1 Your objectives for the oral health of your patient

5.2 Evaluation of your patients motivation, capacity, and ability to follow advice

5.3 Details of the sequence of oral health appointments

5.4 Advice offered related to the identified risk for oral disease for your patient including fluoride advice

5.5 Dietary objectives negotiated with the patient

5.6 Achievements in dietary modifications and changed behaviour in eating patterns

5.7 Recommended oral hygiene aids and products with rationale

5.8 Advice on routine oral hygiene, denture hygiene, and other fixed /removable appliances

5.9 Smoking cessation (if relevant) and if referrals were provided

5.10 Discuss your advice and strategies for behaviour change
