Study Skills Benefits

Introduction

In any academic course, study skills are important. These skills ensure that learners could assimilate course materials in an effective manner with condensed note taking and proper time keeping, all in efforts to achieve a desired academic goal. By exercising these skills, a combination of a sense of independence, discipline when dealing with assigned tasks, as well as adapting perspectives that involve a pragmatic thought pattern can be achieved, which allows learners to meet challenges in a more efficient manner (Potgieter, 2024). Developing such strategies leads to better retention, deeper understanding, and better performance as it encourages consistency in study habits (Nachiappan, 2022). Encouraging and introducing effective study methods provides learners means of engagement with the course materials, which can further assist in their pursuit of achieving academic success.

Note-Taking

The aim to create a reliable habit of note taking is a particularly valuable method within study skills due to the impact that the method has on the way that information is mentally constructed and retained. Structured note-taking has been shown to force people to not only listen more fully, but also to grasp more fully, and to remember more (Nachiappan, 2022). Among the varied methods, (Cornell method, linear, and mind mapping as examples), each of these styles of notetaking can help learners to understand and distinguish the main points, definitions, and relationships between varied ideas.
Another benefit of note-taking is that it can create a thought pattern of critical thinking that breaks material down into component parts opposed to verbatim dictation, while also enabling me to summarize information in my own words or write critical questions in the margins (Nachiappan, 2022). And by doing so, a better grasp of the material is gained, leading to the gradual enlargement of knowledge to transfer acquired knowledge to new and different applications.
Note-taking as a methodology has been identified to save the time spent on locating and reviewing relevant material during revision and help to better organise coursework (Nachiappan, 2022). In doing so, I agree with the conclusion of Nachiappan (2022), that there is indeed a much more efficient and effective way to materialize learning through a deliberate attempt to take notes and, at the same time, build up the foundation for academic development over time.

Time Management

One of the most important techniques among the study skills is time management, which has helped me manage my academic load in a systematic way and achieve success in the long term. If I were to appropriate my time, I would be able to ensure that I could devote most of the time to learning, take a good and sufficient rest, and complete the assignments on time.
Structured time planning assists learners to prioritise and de-stress. "Planners, schedules, and computerized alert schemes are illustrations of aids offering visual structure and accountability." (Payne & Whittaker, 2006, pp 137)
A popularly known method is the Pomodoro Technique, where concentrated work is separated into a sequence of 25-minute blocks (a "Pomodoro") and a brief 5-minute pause. After doing so for four Pomodoros, a more significant break of 15-30 minutes is taken. The method also promotes deep focus on the work sessions, frequent short breaks to avoid cognitive fatigue, and objective improvement by the number of Pomodoros done. It can be employed to eliminate procrastination, enhance concentration, and make large tasks more manageable through the breakdown of large tasks into time-based, repeatable tasks (Marvin et al., 2025). The implementation can be reflected in the weekly logs or entries to planners of the completed Pomedoros (Marvin et al., 2025). Similarly, the Eisenhower Matrix tool helps in sorting between urgent and important tasks and improves the focus on what is important (Dakshinkar & Nimsarkar, 2014).
The disciplines of time management further help in achieving accountability and control over commitments. In that way, I can keep track of all assignments, assessments, and tasks to be done daily, and keep track of progress while also making any necessary adjustments in a timely manner to stay on track for required deadline dates. This mode has been very helpful to me when the situation has arisen where various commitments, academic and otherwise, need to be weighed and prioritized. Regular scheduling leads to a significant decrease in procrastination and nurturing of motivation to accomplish set goals. For me, the development and execution of sound time management have allowed me to keep pace to focus, improve the quality of my delivery, as well as keep the level of well-being consistent over my academic journey (Nadilla Aggahra & Zul Afdal, 2025).

Goal Setting

Constant goal setting is another very important element when dealing with effective study skills because this skill allows for even more definitive focus and motivation, as well as a greater sense of direction (Barua, 2023). Learners can explain why they want to succeed and adequately evaluate their achievements by setting objectives known as SMART, which represent specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound (Pietsch et al., 2024).
For example, when seeking to make a commitment to read two or three chapters a week or so, or to get an l grade in a course, this thought process can be quite debilitating to intentions that can be measured in the study course, thus negating intentions that hold little weight, which can have adverse effects on course direction on a daily basis (Wernersbach et al., 2014).
Structured goal setting forces perseverance and helps students to remain motivated during tough academic periods. Dividing significant objectives into simpler to accomplish undertakings enhances motivation and lessens feelings of exhaustion. Learners feel an emotion of satisfaction when growth is monitored on an ongoing schedule, which stimulates persistent work (Menon & Doshi, 2022).
In the goal setting process, I can also gain greater self-awareness in my attempts to achieve past goals and how I am able to perceive an improvement in myself to achieve my goals in the future. As students review outcomes, they determine strengths and areas for development and, as a result, refined strategies are developed for future tasks. When used with this contemplation, this can help maintain what is called the metacognition awareness, which is, in turn, the general awareness of a learning process that significantly enhances the ability to make decisions and adapt to different circumstances, when necessary (LaVaque-Manty et al., 2023). Overall, goal setting helps the maintenance of a specific and well-defined goal to be achieved in an educational path, which is a crucial component to build a sense of resilience that will provide benefits not only in education but also in the professional world.

Conclusion

Thus, the development of a sound set of study skills helps in enhancing the absorption of material, productivity in all assigned and associated tasks, which in turn achieves the sound academic standards overall. Note-taking strengthens understanding and information recall (Nachiappan, 2022). Time management helps in the distribution of workloads and sustainable study habits. Developing goals provides quantitative indicators of advancement, strengthens inspiration, and conveys direction (Barua, 2023). When combined, this short set of study skills forms a complete foundation to help the experience of learning, as well as personal growth, in a consistently positive way.
Intellectual skills, including attitudes that promote individuality and success over the years, function as tools for achieving academic excellence. Strain reduction, increased trust, & a capacity to uphold an excellent level of learning achievement are all accessible with constant usage of those techniques. The inclusion of methods such as notes taking, time management tools, and SMART goals can provide ways to enable the ability to execute intricate assignments during an academic journey as well as the preparation to execute required duties within an eventual professional setting.
To go one step further, I will have weekly review sessions based on a Pomodoro, keep a Digital Cornell template of lecture notes, and have one SMART study goal every fortnight. Progress will be measured by following progress with short self-checks and planner logs that will be taken once a week and will allow for maintaining motivation during high-assessment periods.
