Case Study

In the medical ward of a small community hospital, Jim an 87 year old male, has been admitted for a 4 day stay of respite for his wife who is caring for him at home. Jim has several chronic health issues and wears a hearing aid. He occasionally misplaces his hearing aid but continues to converse and hears only some conversations and instructions. Today he appears to not have it in his ear.

You are caring for him this shift and you request him to let you know when he is finished reading the morning paper, so you can escort him and assist him for a morning shower. Jim nods in agreement and you leave to gather some fresh bed linen. You take a phone call at the main desk on your way, then continue on to attend the task you started to do, collect the bedlinen for Jims bed. On your return you find Jim is gone, and in a quick search, locate him in the patient bathroom undressed and about to turn the shower taps on. On your arrival, you call out, No Jim, thats the hot tap! I told you to wait for me and I would help you after you had finished reading! Jim turns quickly to you and screams loudly, What are you doing here? Get out! I am quite capable of showering myself! On that demand by Jim, the bathroom door opens, and Jims wife appears asking, Why are you in here with my husband? He is quite able to shower himself nurse I gave instructions that this was one part of his care he can do, and I am encouraging him to continue being independent. On that request, you depart quickly but note that both Jim and his wife are very unhappy by their facial expressions.
