WASHINGTON D.C. — The student who stared and smiled at an elderly Native protester outside the Lincoln Memorial, as schoolmates chanted and laughed, says he did nothing to provoke the man and was only trying to calm the situation. The student identified himself in an email statement Sunday evening as high school junior Nick Sandmann of Covington Catholic High School in Park Hills, Kentucky. An official working with the family confirmed Sandmann's identity, speaking on condition of anonymity because the source didn't want to distract from the statement. Cell-phone videos posted of the confrontation went viral, drawing wide criticism on social media. "I am being called a racist and I will not stand for this mob-like character assassination of my family's name," wrote Sandmann. He added that he and his parents have received death threats since video of Friday's confrontation emerged. Both Sandmann and the Aboriginal man, Nathan Phillips, say they were trying to defuse tensions that were rising among three groups on a day when Washington D.C. hosted both the March for Life and the Indigenous Peoples March. But some say the video gives a different impression. As Phillips plays a Native ceremonial drum and sings of peace, Sandmann can be seen standing extremely close to him – smiling smugly in what appears to be a demonstration of disrespect. His classmates appear to be laughing at the drummer and some can be seen doing a "tomahawk chop" motion.
