The topic debate is: The future of corporate scandals and fraud. Consider in your debate the two recent business ethical scandals involving the convenience stores7-Elevenand the automotive firmVolkswagen.

1) A for convenience stores 7-Eleven Reference list: (A minimum of 7 for A)

2) B for the automotive firm Volkswagen. Reference list: (A minimum of 5 for B)

In your discussion, consideration needs to be given to cross-cultural ethics, global citizenship and the impact of how business ethics can vary culturally and globally. This is predominately an independent research task, and does not align to any one specific topic. Forward reading of all lecture notes and wider research is also required. General topic: Companies behaving badly is it on the rise (student 1) or is such behaviour reducing (student 2), and why / why not?.

CROSS CULTURAL ETHICS LINKING TO YOUR DEBATE // some tips

My tips re cross cultural ethics would include the following:

  1. would we see that some cultures are more tolerant of corruption that others, and would they then be less likely to train in the university and/or workplace?
  2. would religious backgrounds have any impact on the likelihood of behaving in a self-interest manner / regardless of any ethics training?
  3. we may expect to see a higher correlation between countries who are renowned to engage in corruption such as perhaps Iraq and China, however, ironically may of the corporate collapses have occurred in sophisticated and advanced nations such as USA and Aust - that suggests that ethics training (where it is more likely in such countries) appears to have had little it any impact
  4. so it would appear that culture may in fact have little correlation with the likelihood of corporate collapse
  5. but when you look at a case such as the AWB, you can see how the culture in Iraq (condones bribery) can influence a country such as Australia (who supposedly condemn bribery) such that when greed prevails, then no cultural values appear to have any real impact
  6. note that the mentality from Iraq - 'bribery' is the cost of doing business' !!!
  7. countries who traditionally have condoned practices such as bribery, would be less likely to value or train in ethics education - so are there any links to this rationale based on the evidence?
  8. countries who traditionally have condemned practices such as bribery, would be more likely to value or train in ethics education - so are there any links to this rationale based on the evidence?
