The Impact of Empathy and Compassion on Personal and Professional Growth

Once, I while moving in the city I witnessed a very happy child running to show something to his mother. The incident occurred in the slum area of the city. The child who was from a homeless family was holding a bar of chocolate that somebody had handed him. At first, I was concerned if the child was given chocolates or some other toxic material. But after a while noticed that there was a young girl distributing chocolates to the children.

When I approached her and asked why is she distributing chocolates to the children he narrated that she visits the children regularly. She said that it was part of her weekly routine to visit the children and interact with them. She stated that she is a nurse by profession and there are also health camps organized regularly for the people in the slum.

She visits the families and brings them medicines as per their requirements. The needs of the children are her priority and the ladies also ask her about her concern. The queries are answered regarding their health update. She warmly approaches every individual in the slum (Alharbi et al., 2019). She has a very caring approach towards the people. The way she listens to every one of them has a great impression in my mind.

Zina (the girl) didn't hesitate, though. A man came to us with a genuine and sincere smile. Instead of a homeless person, he saw another man in front of him. To hear and see him, he talked to him and asked about his day and interests. This is a small gesture, but it means a lot. This meeting reminded me of the reputation of compassion and empathy. In providing them with physical support, it is also of utmost importance to respect them, recognize their humanity, and make them feel valued. It was this incident that made me begin to learn the meaning of kindness, and I have remembered it since then (Sinclair et al., 2021). It reinforced my firm belief that empathy and compassion have been crucial in accomplishing both my personal and professional objectives. I'm motivated to keep these teachings on my mind and use them every day. I opted for to attend again the next time because I was so impressed by this meeting. This serves as a good reminder that everyone is entitled to the right to be treated with respect and consideration, regardless of their current circumstances (Ofei-Dodoo et al., 2020). Since then, I've put forth an effort to live up to this lesson by showing everyone respect and civility. My objectives in my professional and personal lives were altered by this experience, which additionally caused me realize just how important empathy and compassion are to all relationships.
