Chapter 1: Introduction
Introduction: -Short introduction to project
Background-General research on the topic look at UN/Global data, look for data on physical activity being low amongst CYP, stress and anxiety being high etc, link to social media? Look for reasons why CYP arent doing PA finances? Self-image? The impact this has on a CYP growing up, social interactions etc
In 2021, the World Health Organisation (WHO) reported that 1 in 7 10-19-year-olds globally experienced a mental disorder, with anxiety prevalence being high. The fourth leading cause of death for 15-29-year-olds was suicide (WHO, 2021). In England in 2017, the NHS conducted a survey of children and young peoples (CYP) mental health (MH), with annual follow-ups from 2020 2023. Probable mental disorders in youths aged 8-16 rose from 12% in 2017 to 20% in 2023 (Baker et al., 2024).

Research questions this project aims to answer:
- What is the current prevalence of anxiety and stress amongst adolescents within the United Kingdom (UK)?
- What is the impact of physical activity on adolescents diagnosed with anxiety and stress?
- What can local authorities (LAs) within the UK do to improve the anxiety and stress prevalence amongst adolescents?
Aim and objectives:
Aim: To explore the literature on the appropriateness of physical activity intervention on anxiety and stress prevalence amongst adolescents within the UK
Objectives:
Explore the current literature on:
- The prevalence of anxiety and stress amongst adolescents within the UK.
- The impact that interventions, including physical activity, have on anxiety and stress.
- Existing interventions conducted by LAs which are successful in reducing rates of anxiety and stress amongst adolescents.
- Provide some practical recommendations to LAs on physical activity to improve anxiety and stress amongst adolescents in the UK.
Justification
The WHO reported that adolescents with mental disorders are vulnerable to physical ill-health, stigma, social exclusion, educational obstacles, risk-taking behaviours, and discrimination. Adolescence is an integral period to develop emotional and social habits to maintain good mental well-being. Important habits include regular exercise, healthy sleep patterns, interpersonal skills and coping mechanisms (WHO, 2021). Some of the risk factors adolescents are exposed to which can negatively impact their mental health include exposure to violence, pressure to conform, the quality of their living conditions and lack of access to services and support (WHO, 2021).
CYP are a priority due to approximately 1 in 5 CYP in 2023 having a probable mental disorder. Approximately 25% of this group were unable to take part in extracurricular activities due to financial constraints within the family, compared with 10% who were unlikely to have a mental disorder, highlighting a potential correlation between mental wellbeing and deprivation (NHS, 2023). CYP between the aged 11-16 with probable mental disorders were five times more likely to have been bullied than those unlikely to have a mental disorder (NHS, 2023). Anxiety disorders are the most prevalent within the adolescent age group and can negatively impact educational attendance and attainment. Loneliness and isolation result from social withdrawal and in extreme cases, can contribute to deaths by suicide (WHO, 2021).
- Look for literature on the social aspect, intellectual aspect, health aspect and education aspect what does anxiety and stress stop these CYP doing
- Health impact highlight what a lack of physical activity will do
