Thesis statement (Summarise the argument that will be developed in the paragraphs below. Present paragraph subtopics in the order they occur in body paragraphs.) This essay argues that nurses require four key self-directed learning skills. The most important skills are time-management and having a growth-mindset. In addition, nursing requires a strong sense of responsibility and an adaptability to cope with the demands of their profession.

Body paragraph 1

Topic sentence (Contains topic & controlling idea.) Time management is essential for nurses to manage their workload.

Supporting point 1:

(include source cited accurately to support the argument in this para) Nurses with strong time management skills were less likely to suffer from severe stress (Brown, 2018, p. 55).

Supporting point 2:

(include source cited accurately to support the argument in this para) The most commonly reported cause of error amongst nurses was the result of feeling the need to rush tasks (Bailey et al., 2019, p. 31).

Support point 3 (optional) Body paragraph 2

Topic sentence (Contains topic & controlling idea.) Growth-mindset is essential in health-care where challenges are inevitable and learning is constant.

Supporting point 1:

(include source cited accurately to support the argument in this para) Nurses with a growth mindset enjoy their jobs more as they enjoy the challenges and learning opportunities it brings (Gatewood, 2019, p. 110).

Support point 2 Nurses with a growth mindset are less likely to be overwhelmed or suffer from depression when they make mistakes (Lewis et al., 2020, p. 126).

Support point 3 (optional) Body paragraph 3

Topic sentence (Contains topic & controlling idea.) Furthermore, nurses need to be acutely aware that their roles carry the heavy responsibility for the welfare of patients and their families.

Supporting point 1:

(include source cited accurately to support the argument in this para) Many experienced nurses reported feeling personally responsible for their patients care (Lee et al. 2020, p. 111).

Support point 2 A strong sense of responsibility towards patient welfare was an attribute that was highly regarded in the field of nursing (Brown, 2018, p. 66).

Support point 3 (optional) Body paragraph 4

Topic sentence (Contains topic & controlling idea.) In addition, nurses need to be adaptable to the needs of individual patients

Supporting point 1:

(include source cited accurately to support the argument in this para) Patient-centred care is regarded as fundamental to nursing and requires that they get to know their patients well as soon as possible (Lee, 2020).

Support point 2 Patients who feel personally respected by their nurses are more likely to recover from illness (Bailey, 2019, p. 98).
