Unit of Competency Details

The unit describes the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge to monitor and maintain health and safety in the areas of individual health, hygiene, infectious disease, supervision, risk management, incident and emergency management. It includes the ability to contribute to the ongoing improvement of workplace health and safety policies and procedures.

This unit applies to educators who implement and monitor practices according to established service policies and procedures in a regulated childrens education and care service in Australia. They may also provide guidance to other workers.

The skills in this unit must be applied in accordance with Commonwealth and State/Territory legislation, Australian standards and industry codes of practice.

The purpose of the folder is to ensure the team understand what needs to happen regarding WHS and safety.

This task has four (4) parts:

lefttop00Task instructions For this task you are required to design a walking excursion for the room in the service you are doing your work placement in.

Step 1: You must access the location, facilities and activities prior to the excursion to identify hazards. Document the notes you take and safety considerations in the Excursion Risk Management Plan template.

Step 2: You must write the details of the excursion in a parent communication format to ensure they are aware of what to expect for their childs involvement in the excursion. You have been appointed the WHS officer for the service.

Since being appointed, you have observed the following things:

The medication (an epi pen and allergy medication) in two rooms was expired and one Asthma plan has expired.

Staff are using Milton to sanitise childrens dummies and bottles, however the policy states that the bottles will be sterilised in boiling water in the microwave.

Your Centre Director has asked you to ensure all staff are aware of their responsibilities and are provided with information from recognised authorities to guide their practice.

The Director has informed you that at each staff meeting (monthly) you will be given 30 minutes to talk through WHS issues or areas for improvement including conducting training for the team.
