REFLECTION ON MY INTERVIEW SKILLS
An interview is a unique form of interaction. I interviewed my social work classmate, Sunmi Kensington. The interview was for me to get used to being recorded, practise my class-learned interviewing skills, and assess my strengths and weaknesses for a better learning experience. I was able to introduce myself and tell Sunmisola about confidentiality and what information she would be mandated to report to the authorities. Social workers, as outlined in the AASW's 2010 Code of Ethics, have a duty to their clients to protect their privacy, keep their information confidential, and utilise it responsibly while providing services. To get my client to open up, I used engagement skills. A social worker's skills encourage a working relationship. Clients' anxieties, fears, and concerns can be eased by a warm welcome to the interview facility.
The interviewer's rapport with the client makes it easy for the client to trust and connect with them (OHara & Pockett 2011). Rapport is part of building an empathic relationship. Sunmi identified several issues and spoke at length during the interview, so I had to keep track of what she was saying to understand the story and her perspective. Gerdes and Segal (2011) found that empathy improves client outcomes. One of the weaknesses that I noticed when I did not elaborate a lot on it was how Sunmi was dealing with her health. Probing more is something that I need to work on.
Conclusively, this interview was a good experience for my first try. It was a bit awkward, and I learned I need more practise in my probing, assessment, and planning skills, but I am proud that this interview was as successful as it was. I also definitely see lots of potential for growth in myself.
