Connecting seven tables on Tableau Desktop

Connecting all tables is the first step to use the variables contained in the tables to create visuals. The Excel data file is available in both Pre-class Activities and In-class Activities pages on Canvas.

Download the Excel data file to your computer.

On the home page, under Connect To a File, click Microsoft Excel.

In the pop-up window, select the data file you just downloaded. The data file will then be uploaded to Tableau.

After uploading the data file, you will be prompted to the Data Source page.

Drag and drop the Sales_Orders Table to the working area. The variables will then appear at the bottom of the screen.

Drag and drop the Commissions Table to the working area. These two tables do not connect automatically.

At bottom part of the screen, manually select a common variable, Employee ID, contained in both tables.

Drag and drop the Customers Table to the working area to connect with the Sales_Orders Table. Once again, you need to manually connect the tables at the bottom part of your screen. Since the sales orders contain customers and sales representatives who handled the orders, you may select Customer ID, or Employee IDC, as the common variable to connect the table.

Repeat the same step for other tables. The Marketing_Spend Table can be connected with the Sales_Orders Table via Month and Order Month.

The sales_Targets Tables can be linked with the Customers Table via the common variable Customer Type.

To this point, all seven tables have now been connected. See the screenshot below. Note that, you may connect the tables in various way. As long as all tables are connected, you are ready for the next step.

Tableau prompts you to go to worksheet, see bottom-left of your screen. Click Sheet 1 to open a worksheet.
