Do not compose your own question. Do not write to a general title.
Type the precise question at the top of the essay. Do not change or elaborate upon
the wording of the question in any way.
Do not exceed the word limit and provide an accurate word count. SOAS allows an
extra buffer of up to 10% of the word limit (ie a hard word limit of 2750 per essay), but
please try not to enter this zone.
Submit by the deadline. Unless official mitigating circumstances are submitted in
advance, no extensions will be tolerated.

The following criteria will be used in assessing essays:
Definition of the topic
Has the topic been clearly defined and directly addressed?
Structure of the essay
Does the introduction present a clear statement of issues to be covered?
Does the essay have a clear organisation in which
A) the main points are developed logically; and
b) the relevance of the material to the theme or argument is clear?
Is there an effective conclusion that draws together the main points?

3. Content
Is there evidence of adequate reading and research? Has the question being answered? Is the breadth of coverage adequate? Are the issues and ideas analysed in sufficient depth? Are arguments supported by evidence, examples, sources?
4. Analysis
Are the arguments logical and consistent? Are opinions based on evidence and/or logic? Does the essay show evidence of original or independent thought?
5. Presentation
Fluency and style of writing. Spelling, grammar, paragraphing. Presentation of data: effective use of figures, tables, quantities etc.
Neatness and legibility. Sources and references correctly acknowledged and presented.
Plagiarism
Plagiarism consists of any form of passing off, or attempting to pass off, the knowledge or work of others as ones own. It is a form of cheating. Examples of plagiarism include unattributed quotes from a book, magazine or article; copying from the notes or essays of others; the submission of work actually written or dictated by others; and unattributed use of other peoples ideas. The use of student essay banks is not allowed. Remember, plagiarism includes information from books, newspapers, journals and the Internet. You may use brief extracts from secondary and primary source material so long as they are presented as quotations and properly referenced and you may paraphrase others arguments so long as these too are properly referenced.
