Working in the IT Industry Jobs Assessment

Scenario:

All students in the Computing department at Hertford Regional College need to recognise and understand the IT industry, its different job categories and the variety of job roles available to them in their careers. For this assignment, students will produce a brochure for new prospective students explaining the potential job roles they may go into.

The brochure you produce should be created in Word but as a challenge you may wish to try Publisher or any other desktop publishing application.

Task 1 (P2)

You will describe at least five (5) job roles in the IT industry. Pick one job role from each of five different job categories listed below.

• Communications and Networking
• Business Applications
• Operating Systems
• System Software
• Programming Languages
• Database and Business Intelligence
• Process and Methodologies
• Management Information Systems
• Digital Media
• Cloud Computing

You must research each job and describe where you got your information from. You need to fully describe each job role. Introduce each job role and then list the main features/responsibilities of that job. You should also describe how someone can get that job: describe the skills, experience and qualifications, including professional training qualifications required.

Task 2 (M1)

For each of the five job categories included above, you will explain how that job category fits into the IT industry as a whole. You should use online sources to include, where possible, salaries in that category, job availability and where those jobs can be found.

Again, make sure you include an explanation of where you got your information from.

Task 3 (D1)

Pick one of your chosen job roles from Task 1 (P2) and explain the skills required to do that job. This will be a more detailed explanation of the job and must include:

• All skills required to do that job
• All qualifications and experience needed
• Any university or professional training requirements

You must then compare your existing skills and qualifications and explain how you can progress into that job. You must clearly show how and when you can gain all qualifications, training and experience needed to get the job. If an apprenticeship is required to do the job, you should show clear understanding of how to undertake that apprenticeship.

Again, make sure you include an explanation of where you got your information from.

Task 4 (P3)

Pick one of the chosen jobs roles from Task 1 (P2) and explain the characteristics required for that specific role. You will need to use a number of job adverts and descriptions to identify the characteristics required, which you will then explain. Show evidence of these job descriptions in your work – screenshots will be sufficient.
