ASSESSMENT ITEM 2: DESCRIPTION

PowerPoint Presentation - 10-15 slides with a 10-12 minute speech

In this assessment you are to imagine yourself as a member of a human rights group working towards social justice outcomes in relation to a social/ environmental issue of your choosing. Your group has recently recruited a number of new members and you have been asked to create a PowerPoint presentation with a voice-over oral speech (so members can view the presentation at home) that informs the new recruits about the social justice implications of this issue and about the relevance (or not) of International Human Rights Instruments for socially just outcomes in Australia. Steps in your assessment:

  1. Select one social justice issue which impacts a group of people in Australia. (For example you may choose poverty, discrimination against LGBTQI people, disability, homelessness, racism – if you are unsure check with your lecturer). This is the issue that your human rights group is addressing.
  2. Identify and critically analyse the social justice implications for those who experience this issue – so research this issue and discover the disadvantages, exclusions and injustices for people who experience this issue.
  3. Analyse how this issue is impacted by international human rights instruments (ie UDHR, UN treaties, International Bill of Rights, Conventions etc). Your analysis must include a critical discussion of the following -
    • Identification of any international human rights instruments (or part thereof) which address your chosen issue;
    • Australia’s commitment to uphold that instrument e.g. as a signatory or is there any other rhetoric indicating support or otherwise;
    • Australian legislation or policy that draws on or has the same principles as the human rights instrument and addresses the disadvantages etc you have identified above?;
    • Could the human rights of Australian people impacted by this issue be better protected? Provide examples of any gaps and ongoing problems.

Your voice-over speech should be at least 10 minutes and no more than 12 minutes and the PowerPoint presentation [not PDF] must have at least 10 slides with a maximum of 15 (not including Introduction slides or reference list slides).

ASSESSMENT ITEM 3: DESCRIPTION

Activism Strategy Analysis Project Report- Word Length: 1800 Words

The new recruits you have educated in assessment 2 are now passionate and motivated members of your human rights group. They are very keen to know what they can do to address the disadvantages and injustices that you pointed out in the PowerPoint presentation. So you have been asked to develop a clear social action strategy for the group’s activism.

You are not providing a service to a disadvantaged group – you must identify social action strategies.

This is a written document that would look like a report and be fully referenced.

Your report will

  1. Briefly summarise the human rights and social justice concerns that confront people affected by your chosen issue. This will be briefly drawn from your PowerPoint presentation and will account for no more than 300 words of your analysis.
  2. Your report will then present at least two potential social action activities (remember this is not about service delivery, it is about social action) that your group could undertake to make a difference to the injustices discussed and contribute to realising the human rights of the people concerned.
  3. Drawing on your knowledge and understanding of the theories of social movements you will critically analyse the strengths and weakness of each suggested strategy. Specifically your report will discuss:
    • How each option is relevant to the issue?
    • What the option could potentially achieve – i.e. what are the strengths as a social change strategy and how will it make a difference?
    • What weakness or negative aspects exist for this strategy - i.e. what might potentially go wrong or make the action unworkable?
    • How will the strategy or action contribute to human rights & social justice outcomes for individuals groups and communities and the international human rights agenda?
  4. Finally make a recommendation to the membership of your group about what social change action or activism they should proceed with, and why, based on your research.
