Appendix A: Hazard Inspection/Risk Assessment (Hilda)
Case Study 1:
Read this case study carefully before completing the activity and address any areas you are unclear of with your Assessor before commencing.
Hilda is a single mother of an 18-month-old girl, Charlie. Hilda is blind. Hilda lives at home and is doing a great job of caring for her daughter since Charlies birth.
Hilda has contacted you as she is concerned that Charlie is now mobile and running around. Last week Charlie was found in toilet playing in the toilet bowl with her toys. Charlie also had a fall and cut her knee quite badly on a toy which was laying on the floor and keeps telling Hilda it is very sore. Another area of concern for Hilda is fire safety and how she can ensure that both her and Charlie can take precautions to be safe in their home. Hilda realises that with Charlie now mobile, there is a need for additional help to care for her daughter.
Key areas identified previously at the home include the following:
Hildas home is on one level.
Furniture has been arranged so it is easy for Hilda to get around.
Hilda uses a cane.
In the past, Hilda has been able to confine Charlie to one area for play activities. Now there are toys all over the place.
Hilda is capable of providing meals for herself and Charlie.
All cupboards have child safety locks.
There are safety protectors on all power points.
There is one smoke alarm in the kitchen the battery was last changed 12 months ago.
Charlie has learned that if she is very quiet, Hilda cant tell what she is doing (this is how she was able to play in the toilet without being detected).
Charlie is a big child who likes to be picked up a lot.
Today you are visiting Hilda to do a safety assessment of her home as part of the direct client care provided by Key 2 Care.
Based on Hildas information it is important to also assess Charlies injury.
Activity 1: Hazard identification and risk assessment
On arrival at Hildas you inform her that it will be necessary for you to conduct a hazard inspection and risk assessment before any discussions can be had regarding the measures which can be implemented to ensure both her and Charlies safety.
For this activity you will need to complete two (2) tasks. Read each task carefully and complete the required documentation as specified in each task.
Task a: Hazard Inspection and Risk Assessment
For this task you need to complete Appendix A: Hazard Inspection/Risk Assessment which is provided in this assessment.
Complete the template and ensure that you address all sections in detail, based on the information provided in the case study as well as the sections which have been prepopulated.
Appendix A: Hazard Inspection/Risk Assessment (Hilda) (Assessment 2, Activity 1)Use this table to determine the current risk for each identified hazard in the template below.
