5NH038 Open Book Exam Guidance
Assessment Task:
There is one component to the assessment for 5NH038 with a 100% grade weighting. The module assessment is an open book exam. This assessment will be based on one of your chosen case studies out of the three that were covered on the module.
The answers you provide in the exam must relate to the individual in your chosen case study and the 5NH038 module content. The written work must address the four learning outcomes and include:
- The pathophysiology of commonly encountered mental, physical, behavioural, or cognitive health conditions that you identify within your chosen individual.
- You must apply relevant evidence to justify how and why nursing interventions might influence the health of the individual and their health condition.
- You must critically discuss legal, ethical and professional issues that underpin nursing practice in relation to your chosen individual.
- You must evaluate sources of evidence and their impact on health and healthcare outcomes in relation to your chosen individual.
All four module learning outcomes must be achieved at 40% for the assessment to be passed.
Questions:
Your exam will be around your chosen case study, and you need to make it clear to the reader which one of the three case studies (condition) you have chosen. You will answer 2 essay style questions to cover all four learning outcomes in your exam. Therefore, you are strongly advised to focus on the module learning outcomes when preparing for and writing your exam.
Time:
This is a 2-hour exam. Extra time for TAS students will be given as per their TAS statement during the exam. As this is an exam, there will not be an automatic 7-day extension for any students. If you are unable to sit the exam on the set date/time you can apply for extenuating circumstances. You will be required to support your claim with appropriate evidence.
Assessment Date:
Your open book exam will take place on the w/c 10 June 2024. An exact date, time and location will be released closer to your exam.
What can you use during your exam?
As this is an open book exam, you will be able to bring 2 books/ journal articles of your choice into the exam. This can be any combination of 2 books, 2 journals or 1 of each (Maximum two pieces of literature). Journal articles must not be a pre-prepared case study. No annotation or highlighting is allowed on any of the material brought in, however blank postit notes can be used. Journals will be retained by the exam invigilators. You must identify your chosen book/journal on the reference list prior to submission.
What can you provide as part of this exam? T
A full set of references that you plan to use within your text for submission with your assessment. These should be presented following the university reference guidelines (HARVARD 2018 style as listed on the Library Study Skills site). The reference list should only include the references that you cited in the exam. This should be presented in typed format size 12 font.
The reference list is an advisory
Academic Writing:
During this module you have ongoing formative writing opportunity that you should utilise in view to prepare for writing in the exam at Level 5. These sessions would enable you to develop your understanding selecting credible sources of evidence and utilising those to support your answers.
How much time I need to spend on each question:
It depends on your questions in the exam. If you have 2 questions in the exam and question one is about pathophysiology (LO1) only and question 2 covers other 3 learning outcomes, you will have to use your time wisely in the exam to ensure all learning outcomes are addressed fully. Ideally about 30 minutes for each learning outcome.
Assessment support:
As per academic regulations, module staff members are no longer allowed to routinely offer 1:1 support session on an individual basis*. Therefore, during your module you will be given the opportunity to undertake ongoing formative assessment and attend assessment caf (week 5). Students can work in groups and provide peer feedback for their formative writing. Please ensure that you make the most of these opportunities so that we can help and support you in your learning.
*Students who have Tutor Awareness Sheets (TAS) in place are entitled to one 1:1 session with their nominated module support tutor If you have a TAS in place, please contact your campus co-ordinator ASAP to ensure that you have all of your support requirements in place. Their contact details are available on the 5NH038 CANVAS home page.
