IntroductionA warm welcome to the University of Derby's Minor Injuries module (6NU518). This module aims to enhance practitioners' skills in managing patients presenting with minor injuries (i.e., minor injuries from incidents at home, in the public area and at work). The module content, peer discussion and presentations by experts will contribute to your knowledge and skills to deliver effective and efficient evidence-based care.
Examination techniques are considered in the rich multi-media content; although there is no 'hands-on' examination in this module, we do hope the critical commentary in our online materials affords you, the student, to question, reflect and refine your examination techniques in the clinical setting. As with all aspects of clinical practice, this would need to be agreed with the student's employer, in line with regulatory body guidance and other national and local guidelines.
Module Learning OutcomesOn successful completion of this module, you will be able to:
Critically apply the relevant anatomy, physiology, and pathophysiology to the care of patients with minor injury.
Formulate a diagnosis, treatment and appropriate referral plan for patients presenting with minor injury.
Description of the assessmentThe aim of this assessment is for students to demonstrate the theoretical knowledge they have gained from their study during this module related to the assessment of an individual with a minor injury. The summative, graded assessment comprises two pieces of course work and you must achieve 40% or more in both pieces of coursework to pass the module.
CW1 (50% weighting) - A portfolio containing the patchwork assessments/discussion postings demonstrating critical reasoning, application of knowledge to practice and logical approach to history taking (1500 words).
Throughout the module you will be learning and writing about various aspects of minor injuries. This formative work will develop your critical thinking and academic writing (developing your academic narrative, grammatical presentation and Harvard referencing abilities) and can contribute to your summative assignment. You should support your writing with credible academic literature including a Harvard reference list and if necessary, appendices and must address Learning Outcome 1 and 2.
CW2 (50% weighting) - A reflective analysis on a case presented via videotape of a simulated patient with a minor injury (2000 words).
A patient video will be made available at the end of the third week in the module. You will be asked to complete a case study template, which will help you analyse the case being presented. You will then reflect on the examination being undertaken and will explain what was done with the patient. You will also refer to critically discuss the relevant anatomy, physiology, and pathophysiology to the care of patient with a minor injury and formulate a diagnosis, treatment and where appropriate a referral plan. You should support your writing with credible academic literature including a Harvard reference list and if necessary, appendices and must address Learning Outcome 1 and 2.
