Abstract
A prescribed format for student assignments is presented. The method requires the concentration of the student in order for the process to be followed accurately. The finite element (FE) results of the students solution will be displayed in this format. The student will use the prescribed format to illustrate how to present work in a prescribed format, which is required when authoring articles for a journal or conference proceeding. Make sure you read some research papers so that you can write an abstract correctly!
Title of Section (e.g. General Introduction)
Main body text is justified. The first line of each section is not tabbed. Each paragraph is started on the next line and tabbed in.
The assignment will be in A4 size with margins top 30 mm, left and right 17.5 mm, bottom 22 mm. A column separation of 10 mm is used. The text should be Times or Times Roman with font size 12 point.
Insert level 2 headings as shown (12 font, bold)
Ensure that there is a logical flow to the document and that the inclusion of each heading is appropriate. Do not insert headings to pad out the document.
If required you should insert level 3 headings as shown (12 font, italic)
Text should follow each section heading. Use headings to support your findings and make it easy for the reader to navigate through your document.
Preparation and Submission
The following Section will describe how to prepare your files for submission
Use of this Template
Your assignment should be prepared using this document as a template. Failure to adhere to the template will prevent you from receiving marks for presentation.
General Procedures for Submission
You will upload the following files:
A version of your report in Microsoft Word format. The file should be named 219548144.docx
One ABAQUS input file that was used to investigate the structural response of your chosen shape must be uploaded. You can choose a file used to investigate vibration or static deflection of your chosen wire shape (not the straight piece of wire). The input file should be named 219548144.inp
You must also upload the relevant ABAQUS data file .dat that corresponds to your input file. The data file should be named 219548144.dat
Assignment submissions must not exceed 8 pages including illustrations. If the document exceeds 8 pages, the additional pages (eg. page 9, 10, 11) will not be assessed. It is important for you to concisely communicate key findings, hence the page limit will be strictly enforced. The file size for your report will be typically less than 2Mb in size. Problems with over-large file size are usually the result of using unnecessarily high resolution in graphics.
Software Used and Final Paper Format
The assignment must be submitted in Microsoft Word format (.docx). Ensure that all text, equations and figures are clearly visible in the final document.
Diagrams and Figures
Care should be taken over the preparation of diagrams and figures which may incorporate colour where it adds to the presentation. Figures will either be entered in one column or two columns and should be 80 mm or 170 mm wide respectively. A minimum line width of 1 point is required at actual size. Annotations should be in 10 point with the first letter only capitalised. The figure caption should be preceded by Figure: followed by the figure number. For example, Figure: 1: A detail view of a Finite Element.
Figure 1: A detail view of a Finite Element mesh. The contour shows a constant strain in each element (nodal averaging has been de-activated)
If you are inserting images that are captured from ABAQUS CAE, ensure that you do not use the default ABAQUS background. All ABAQUS CAE images should have a solid white background. You should also ensure that any text (eg. The legend) can be read once your image has been inserted into this template.
Photographs and illustrations
Authors should recognise that all photographs must be of sufficient quality. Image files should be optimised to minimise size without compromising the quality.
Tables
Sometimes it is more appropriate to insert a table. Tables should be captioned as shown below. Note that the formatting requirement for tables is different to figures.
Table 1: An example table the description may require 2 or more linesRegion Stocks Stocks
18-May-07 11-May-07
East 905 838
West 301 287
Producing 740 717
Lower 48 1,946 1,842
Keep your tables clean and as small as possible. Refer to an appendix if you would like to direct the audience to more detailed information.
Equations
Using the appropriate editor each equation should occur on a new line with uniform spacing from adjacent text as indicated in this template. The equations, where they are referred to in the text, should be numbered sequentially and their identifier enclosed in parenthesis, right justified. The symbols, where referred to in the text, should be italicized.
E=mc2 ( SEQ equ * MERGEFORMAT 1)
General Style Preferences
The author is responsible for the correctness of the scientific content.
Style of Writing
Abbreviations should be spelt out in full the first time they appear and their abbreviated form included in brackets immediately after eg. Finite Element (FE). Words used in a special context should appear between single quotation marks the first time they appear.
References
The papers in the reference list must be cited in the text. In the text the citation should appear in square brackets [ ], as in, for example, the red fox has been shown to jump the black cat [3] but not when.... In the Reference list the font should be Times or Times New Roman with 10 point size. The Author name list should be terminated by a full stop, last Name first. The citation number should be enclosed in brackets.
Book titles should be in italics, followed by a full stop. Proceedings or journal titles should be in italics. Only the first letter of the title should be capitalised in the article name.
Conclusion
Make sure that you spend a lot of time to formulate valid and objective conclusions to your work. This will always be your final section.
