Purpose
The importance of assessing the needs of a community in relation to a chosen public health issue cannot be underestimated. This assessment will allow you to demonstrate your skills in conducting a needs assessment on a particular health issue by allowing you to develop and practice implementing the required research and analytical skills to undertake a needs assessment.Please note that you are not expected to undertake any specific community based research( ie you don't need to design your own surveys etc )
Needs Assessment
Needs Assessment: is a systematic method of identifying unmet healthand health care needs of a population and making changes to meet these unmet needs. It involves an epidemiological and qualitative approach to determining priorities. This approach must balance clinical, ethical and economic need - that is, what should be done, what can be done and what can be afforded.
Task/Instructions
Must be Australian based.
1.Select an LGA (Local Government Area) (hint: can be your own home city/town) and choose oneof the following public health issues:
? Smoking
? Vaping
? Obesity
? Alcohol
- Complete a Needs Assessment identifying the:
- Felt needs- Find out what the people in your selected LGA feel about your selected issue.
- Comparative needs-comparing the need of two similar communities (can also include a possible comparison
- Expressed needs-is what can be inferred about need from observing how people use a service. Think about a service in your LGA that focusses on the issue
- Normative needs-is generally defined by expert opinion regarding appropriate levels. Look at the population health data
Please note that you may not be able to assess data relating to some of the specific needs, for example the comparative needs however you are expected to discuss the challenges/limitations that you experienced collecting your information. You are expected to analysis the information available to you and present some evidence informed conclusions.
Preparation
Your needs assessment must be based around either a particular LGA for example City of Darwin or the City of Sydney. You are expected to research your selected health issue extensively. You are also expected to include relevant literature.
The completion of readings and activities in the unit will build the underpinning knowledge for this assessment.
