Introduction

The guiding principles in a traditional corporate culture are: follow the instructions given; do not make any mistakes; do not fail; do not take initiatives but wait for instructionsThe restrictive environment is of course not conducive to creativity, flexibility, independence or risk taking (Hirsch and Peters 1992 cited in Burns 2013). But, Thompson (2002 cited in Burns 2013) noted that There is a real need for corporate entrepreneurs at the moment, for too long the prevailing consensus has been if it aint broke, dont fix it, but entrepreneurs recognize that action and change are crucial for maximizing potential and taking advantage of opportunities.

Over the weeks leading up to this summative assessment we will have delved into exactly why that entrepreneurial mindset is so important, especially given the current complexities of the business landscape. It is interesting that even though Thompson noted this in 2002, now in 2021, this still resonates and is more vital than ever.

(Burns, P., 2013 Corporate Entrepreneurship Innovation and Strategy in large organizations 3rd Ed London: Palgrave MacMillan)
