a. A venturi meter as shown in Figure Q2a(i) is often used to measure the fluid flowrate in a pipe.
i. The venturi meter has water flowing through it and the liquid used in the manometer (as shown in Figure Q2a(i) as red color) is mercury. Given that the inlet diameter (point 1) is 30 cm and the diameter at the throat (point 2) is a cm, where 10 15 and the difference in the height of the liquid in the manometer, ? = 6 . Using your choice of a, determine the volumetric flow rate in m3 /s through this meter using the appropriate form of energy conservation principles. If the venturi meter is now set inclined at 30° to the horizontal as shown in Figure Q2a(ii), and the reading of the manometer is remained same 4 = 6 compare the volumetric flow rate of water in Q2a(ii) with Q2a(i)
Figure Q2b shows a pipe U-bend and it is connected to a flow system by flexible hoses which transmit no force. The pipe is a 3-in diameter pipe and water is flowing through the pipe at rate of 0.04 m3/s.
The pressure at point 1 and point 2 is 35 kPa and 20 kPa respectively.
i. Apply a proper form of energy conservation principle, determine the vertical component of the force in the support. State all the assumptions made in your calculations.
ii. If the pipe is now a 4-in diameter pipe, analyze the change in the vertical force needed by the support for the U-bend.
