Part A: Essay plan

Find at least five (5) references to support your position on the essay topic:

Up to three (3) references must be from myReadings.

At least two (2) additional references must be sourced independently from the SCU library website or Google Scholar. These references must be scholarly and recent (ie peer-reviewed journal articles published within the last five years).

All sources must be able to be accessed via SCU library or myReadings. Random sources from the internet are not acceptable sources

Use the blank essay plan template provided on the learning site to draw up an essay plan. This includes a position statement and an outline of three (3) body paragraphs. Further instructions are provided on the template.

Part B: Draft of two body paragraphs

Develop two (2) consecutive paragraph plans from Part A into draft paragraphs of 200-250 words each.

Begin each draft paragraph with the topic sentence you wrote in Part A

Develop your supporting points from Part A into complete sentences with in-text citations

End each draft paragraph with the concluding sentence you wrote in Part A

Remember this is only a draft. Before you submit your final essay these paragraphs may change significantly in response to the markers feedback and your continuing research.

Part C: Reference list

Up to three (3) references from myReadings, and at least another two (2) references you find yourself. As you plan your essay you should continually refer to the essay topic to help you to stay focused. Therefore, it is a good idea to have it written and highlighted at the top of your essay plan.

Insert your position statement in this section. This should be one complete sentence that clearly and concisely indicates your overall response/argument related to the essay topic. You need to argue either for OR against do not sit on the fence.

Three paragraph plans

For each paragraph plan:

Start with a topic sentence written as a full sentence, without citations. Each topic sentence should introduce a different specific key point or claim (ie a specific positive or negative impact) so that you have the scope to make a convincing argument.

Under the topic sentence, add supporting evidence. These should be listed in dot point form to act as prompts when you start writing the essay. Supporting points should have citations; you should include at least two different citations per paragraph plan.

Finish with a concluding sentence written as a full sentence, without citations. The concluding sentence should re-state the key point you introduced in the topic sentence, but in different words.

It is very important that you engage with tutorial activities and examples, and the exemplar in the learning site, as you prepare your Essay Plan Portfolio.

1 Insert your first paragraph plan, including: a topic sentence; supporting points with examples and evidence (citations); and a concluding sentence.

2 Insert your second paragraph plan, including: a topic sentence; supporting points with examples and evidence (citations); and a concluding sentence.

3 Insert your third paragraph plan, including: a topic sentence; supporting points with examples and evidence (citations); and a concluding sentence.
