Aims and Summary

This module aims to provide the student with an awareness of the international nature of the aerospace industry and provide the opportunity to study how the global nature impacts upon the business, economics, structure, strategic philosophies and practices.

To provide the student with sufficient basic management and business, skills and terminology for direct entry into the management structure of an aerospace business.

Intended Module Learning Outcomes

The intended learning outcomes are that on completion of this module the student should be able to:

  1. Analyse and evaluate aspects of the Aerospace Industry and the events and organizations and legislation which helped shape it.
  2. Analyse and evaluate the financial arrangements of a typical aerospace company including accounts, financial reports, fund raising and airframe
  3. Analyse and evaluate aerospace strategies in marketing and management including techniques such as quality systems and `just in time' and `lean'
  4. Plan and control a simple aerospace
  5. Critically review how aircraft, aircraft maintenance and airspace and airports are managed.

Indicative Content

Influencing Factors:

  • Impact of domestic government; Monetary, Environmental, Foreign and Regulatory policies.
  • Impact of non-domestic governments; USA industrial might, EEC, GATT, IMF, Deregulation.
  • Impact of random influences; war, fuel crises, technological advances. Impact of Aerospace Industry on economy and foreign relations.
  • Impact of CAA, SIGs, Regulatory Bodies, Professional Bodies, Euronav, RNav.
  • Chicago 44, Seaman's rights extensions. Bilateral/Trilaterals, Bermuda Agreement. The Five freedoms. Freedoms 6, 7, 8.
  • Principles of TQM and quality management systems.

Introduction to project management.

Airports:

  • support services; crew, passenger, aircraft and operations.
  • Airport physical structure, management structure. Contingency planning. Airport legislation, security, environmental.

Airspace management:

  • ATC operations and procedures, international regulations.
  • Slot allocations, means of distribution, ownership, impact upon Schedule and Charter services.
  • Aircraft design and maintenance philosophies: F.I., hours calendar, OOPs.
  • Reliability, MTBF, management tools, risk assessment FMEA.
  • Repair, Maintenance, Servicing and Modification. Skilling requirements. Life cycle costing, aerospace techniques; ILS.
  • QMS, ISO 9000, TS147. Role in operations, supply, design and manufacture. QMS, CAA/FAA and Defence requirements.

Airline operations:

  • costing, aircraft selection, role, route, geography, politics, load factors, seat densities.
  • Domestic and International law in the Aerospace industry.
