Perform AM by multiplying (mixing) of the message and a carrier signal using a diode as a non-linear device, see circuit diagram below. The MATLAB code mixerdiode.m is provided and this solves v? (output voltage) for a given input voltage, v. Your message should be the triangular wave generated by triwave.m; your carrier signal should be of the form given in equation 1. diodecaller.m is provided to aid you with this exercise. Read all the code provided carefully in order to make sure that you understand, and make any necessary modifications.
Vcarrier A cos(2 ft)+% (1)
You will need the the I-V characteristic of a typical diode, as given by the Shockley diode model, equation 2.
l=ls(v1-v2/envr-1)
where Is is the scale current and is 102 A; n is the ideality factor and is 2 and VT is the thermal voltage and is 25 mV.
The voltage v? across the load resistance is therefore given by
v2=lsRl(v1-v2/envr-1)
From equation 3, the voltage across the load v is clearly non linearly dependent on and this results in v? containing terms depending on higher powers of v (expand out in Taylor series) in particular of Since message +Varrier, there will be a term which is the product of me and carrier. It is this multiplication which results in AM of the carrier with the message signal.
You should show that the circuit does mix (multiply) the carrier and message signals (use the triangular wave as the message signal) by
