ULO2: Understand early language acquisition from 0-5 years and an introduction to related issues of child development
Task Description
This assessment requires you to prepare an individual academic presentation. You will demonstrate your understanding of one selected theory of early language development in young children and how childrens literature (select one quality childrens picture book) can be used to support childrens early literacy and language learning; and consider how you will scaffold young learners from diverse backgrounds (select one diverse factor to discuss). (For example, cultural/linguistic - EAL/D, gifted and talented, learning difficulty).
Rationale
The aim of this assessment is to allow you to demonstrate your critical understanding and knowledge of theories of early language development and learning. You will also demonstrate your knowledge of childrens literature and how it can be used to scaffold childrens language and literacy experiences as diverse learners. This assessment will see you use the skills that will be transferable to real life workplace like the ability to be responsive to change, to be inquiring and reflective in practice. You will develop a commitment to excellence in all scholarly and intellectual activities, including critical judgement.
Task Instructions
You will create a script of 1500 words (references are not included in the word count) taking into consideration the following points provided below. Then create an oral presentation (15 slides maximum), using the script, to be delivered via a PowerPoint (or similar application) that is a maximum of 10 minutes duration.
Select ONE theory of early language development and learning. Focus on language development of children aged between 0 to 5 years. (Select one age group to focus on in your presentation e.g., 4-year-olds).
Explain how the selected theory of language development is important for childrens development.
Explain and justify the importance of quality childrens literature for children from diverse backgrounds with consideration of factors that may impact upon childrens literacy and language development
Explain how quality childrens literature can be used to scaffold diverse childrens literacy and language development.

Late Submissions & Penalties
In this section, outline the university policy regarding late submission and penalties. SCU policy states that:
Except when special consideration is awarded, late submission of assessment tasks will lead automatically to the imposition of a penalty. Penalties will be incurred as soon as the deadline is reached.
a penalty of 5% of the available marks will be deducted from the actual mark at one minute after the time listed in the due date
a further penalty of 5% of the available mark will be deducted from the actual mark achieved on each subsequent calendar day until the mark reaches zero.
