The research aim is to improve construction safety performance through the development and application of a risk assessment approach.

The specific objectives include identifying the impact of the pandemic on safety practices in construction projects, analyzing the measures taken by construction firms to ensure the safety of their workers, and assessing the effectiveness of these measures.

Research Design a systematic literature review that involves identifying and analyzing relevant articles published in reputable academic journals.

It involves the development and application of a risk assessment approach for enhancing construction safety performance.

It is a survey-based study that involved administering a questionnaire to construction firms operating in Saudi Arabia

Key Findings the construction industry susceptible to force majeure events and environmental risks, including project complexity, lack of contingency plans, inadequate risk assessment, and insufficient communication among project stakeholders.

Proposes a systematic risk assessment approach that can help identify and mitigate potential hazards in the construction industry.

the COVID-19 pandemic had a significant impact on safety practices in construction projects. Many construction firms reported implementing new measures to ensure worker safety, such as providing personal protective equipment, increasing cleaning and disinfection, and enforcing social distancing.

Limitations Its reliance on secondary data and the use of a single research method. The review did not include gray literature, which could have provided additional insights into the topic.

The proposed approach may require additional resources and time to implement, and its effectiveness may vary depending on the specific context and conditions of a construction project.

its reliance on self-reported data, which could be subject to bias or inaccuracy.

Impact of pandemic on construction industry The research paper highlights that the COVID-19 pandemic has had a significant impact on the construction industry worldwide, leading to delays, cost overruns, and supply chain disruptions. The paper also emphasizes the importance of implementing measures such as remote working, social distancing, and the use of personal protective equipment to mitigate the spread of the virus and maintain project continuity.

As the paper was published in 2020, it is possible that the authors briefly mention the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the construction industry, but it is unlikely to be a major theme of the paper.

The COVID-19 pandemic has had a significant impact on the construction industry, leading to delays, disruptions, and changes in safety practices. Construction firms have had to adopt new measures to ensure worker safety, such as social distancing, enhanced cleaning protocols, and remote work options.

Different risks which are posing a challenge The paper discusses two types of risks that are posing a challenge to the construction industry: force majeure events and environmental risks. Force majeure events refer to unforeseen events such as natural disasters or pandemics that disrupt the normal course of business, while environmental risks refer to risks related to climate change, such as rising sea levels and extreme weather events.

The research paper discusses a risk assessment approach for enhancing construction safety performance. The paper focuses on identifying and evaluating the different risks and hazards that can impact construction projects, such as falls from height, electrocution, and fire, and proposes a systematic approach for mitigating these risks.

The pandemic has introduced new risks that are posing challenges to the construction industry, such as supply chain disruptions, reduced productivity, and worker shortages. In addition, the increased emphasis on safety measures has added new costs to construction projects, which may impact budgets and schedules. There are also concerns about the mental health of construction workers, who may face additional stress and anxiety due to the pandemic.

Emphasis Environmental risks, which affects construction projects Risk management approach Possible new risks due to pandemic

A personal reflection of your learning experience

The research proposal helped me to analyze the topic of the research into detail. Without this exercise it was not possible to explore the different dimensions in depth. It also illuminates the importance of further research in this area to help the construction industry continue to operate successfully during and beyond the pandemic. The search process contributed in enhancing my learning about the selection of the scholar articles. Checking their relevance and validating their use with respect to research topic had encouraged me to write quality for the same. During this exercise I also learnt about credibility tools and their implication on research. With their help I was able to know the selected literature quality and made appropriate use of the solution. Theme matrix was another tool which has strengthened my research skills as I was able to narrow down the themes for the research. This helped me to eliminate the areas which are not useful for research. The research gap will be well addressed in the main research portion with this exercise. This also allowed me to stay on track and follow the research direction so that the purpose of the research can be achieved.
