Assessment 2 Yasmin Case Study

(2700 words - plus or minus 10%)

Yasmin is 13 years old. She grew up in Syria and migrated to Australia 3 years ago. Yasmin had a very happy childhood in Syria. She had one brother only, they were very close like friends. They both enjoyed the art subject at school and did many art projects together. However, things changed when the war started. Yasmins brother was killed in an explosion when he was walking back home from school. His death was a shock for everyone, but they never talked about it as a family. Later that year, her family migrated to Australia.

Initially, Yasmin wasnt happy about the move, she missed her friends and found language very difficult. But things are different now, Yasmin has two very close friends and she is doing well in school. However, the situation at home isnt very good because her dad is increasingly becoming more controlling. He doesnt allow her to see her friends or talk to them outside school. Also, he walks her to and from school every day which is very embarrassing for her.

Her parents are well known in her school, they come to all the school events and activities to support Yasmin. They also make regular contact with the school counsellor to make sure that Yasmin is well supported. Yasmin likes the school counsellor and she makes regular appointments with her. The counsellor informed Yasmin about new art classes starting in the local library. The local library is not very close, and she would have to use the bus. Also, the classes are not free and there is no concession or discount. Yasmin talked to her mum about this opportunity.

Yasmins relationship with her mum is very good, her mum is very supportive of her, but she told her that they unfortunately cannot afford the extra art classes at the local library because her dad has recently lost his job. Yasmins family is a bit isolated because they live far from other Syrian families and they are not very well connected to their neighbours. They have been saving money to buy a car which should make things easier.

You are to imagine that you are a social worker or human service worker

- tasked with helping Yasmin [and her family] to further develop their resilience: -

Paying attention to an in-depth understanding of Bronfenbrenners ecological systems theory also

Focusing on an in-depth understanding of Sarahs age and developmental stage, drawing on either Erikson, Piaget and/or Vygotskys theory of human development

You need to consider all of the things going on for Yasmin in her life; within her family network and broader systems network; and what you, as a social worker can do to help Yasmin and her whole family further develop their resilience to cope with the adversities and changes they have experienced since migrating to Australia 3 years ago. Also, mindful of current concerns they are all facing.

Case study is very brief can we make some assumptions?

I just want to highlight an important point about making assumptions in the case study. While it is OK to make some assumptions, assumptions will have to be limited, relevant and justified by literature. In other words, making assumptions is not about creating a new story, instead, it is about introducing possibilities based on literature and information provided, e.g. based on literature, there may be some common experiences of children starting school, therefore, if you want to make some assumptions in this area, you will need to relate it back to what the literature is suggesting as common experience.

Should all references be from the e-reading list and the textbook?

We expect students to make a good use of e-readings, so we would like to see most of your references come from there (at least 6-8 references from e-readings including text and essential readings). In addition to that, you can do your own research and add your own references to the list.

Do we need to include theories throughout the paper or in in the adversity section only?

A 'theory' can be applied to any section because it is a 'lens' or 'a way of thinking' that can be used to inform your analysis throughout the paper.

In addition to systems theory, you'll need to use one of these 3 theories: Piaget, Erickson or Vygotsky's. We expect students to use and demonstrate their theoretical knowledge throughout the assignment, but the general definition and explanation of these theories should take place in the adversity section i.e. you'd need to define and explain these theories in the adversity section and then you apply the knowledge of these theories (especially systems theory) to your discussion of adversities, protective factors etc.

Can we reference websites?

Students should use academic references as this will strengthen their arguments and discussion in the assessment. Depending on the website, it may be ok to use one website reference, but there shouldnt be heavy reliance on it (note: there needs to be a minimum of 8 academic references).

Do we need to include the case study in our assessment?

Not necessary

Should we include the subheadings in our assessment?

Yes

Can we use more than 8 references?

Yes (a minimum of 8 academic references)

Can we use first person?

No
