Assessment guidance community profile.

This assessment is designed to test your ability to meet the module learning outcomes below.

LO1: Critically evaluate, interpret and explain health needs and health inequalities using theoretical frameworks and demographic health data in the context of a community.

LO2: Demonstrate the ability to conceptualise public health problems, critically evaluate public health strategies and policies and formulate solutions recognising current local and national priorities in public health.

There is a recording of an overview of the assessment guidance. This recording includes examples of what sort of things you might be talking about in each section, ways to structure your work and other information about how to get started. You can watch and listen to this in Blackboard, Sustainable Public Health, the Assessment folder.

Start by signing up to a community on sign-up in week 2. Nova will tell you about this in class.

Part A: The community (50 marks)

In this section you will need to show the marker you can:

Use a social determinant of health model (Barton and Grant or Dahlgren & Whitehead) to logically structure your work.

Find and use data to show the community's health and well-being, both positive and negative, at different levels of a social determinants of health model.

Use data from Understanding Welsh places and the Welsh Index for Multiple Deprivation (WIMD), and other up-to-date and relevant sources specific to the community.

Present data coherently, correctly labelled and referenced.

Summarize the data to provide the reader with a comprehensive understanding of the health of the community.

Identify the areas that potentially have the biggest impact on health and well-being in your chosen community (positive or negative) and use wider reading to critically discuss how these could impact on the health of the chosen community.

Write coherently, logically and at the expected level 7 postgraduate standard of writing.

Reference your work correctly both in-text and in the reference list, using the USW Harvard referencing system.

Part B: The triple challenge (30 marks)

In this section you will need to show the marker you can:

Identify the ways that the triple challenge (Brexit, Covid-19, climate change) AND the current challenge of the rising cost of living will likely impact on the chosen community, and their health and wellbeing, based on findings from part 1 and using wider reading to support your answer.

Use a social determinants of health model to identify different layers/sections specific to the chosen community that might be influenced by the triple challenge, and explain what this might mean for the communities health (positively or negatively) using wider reading to support your answer.

Write coherently, logically and at the expected level 7 postgraduate standard of writing.

Reference your work correctly both in-text and in the reference list, using the USW Harvard referencing system.

Part C: The solutions (20 marks)

In this section you will need to show the marker you can:

Identify evidence-based solutions that could be put into place to specifically improve or support the health and well-being of the chosen community, or specific groups of people in the chosen community, taking into consideration the positive/negative aspects of the chosen community (from part 1) and the triple challenge (from part 2).

Connect the evidence-based solutions to the achievement of relevant goals in the Health and Wellbeing for Future Generations Act.

Write coherently, logically and at the expected level 7 postgraduate standard of writing.

Reference your work correctly both in-text and in the reference list, using the USW Harvard referencing system.
